Cheap flights

Does anyone know the cheapest way to fly to Dubrovnik from North West England?

|||

Try thomsonfly - the offer cheap flights from Manchester to Dubrovnik if this helps at all

Also Flybe go from Birmingham to Dubrovnik.

You did not say exactly which airport you wished to fly from ??

Also try lastminute.co.uk for flights

I have just booked a return flight from Split to the UK (Gatwick) for less than 80 UK pounds return.

Hope you find what you are looking for and have a good trip to beautiful Croatia !!

|||

Sorry should have said I have booked a flight with easyjet from/to Split.

Easyjet also fly from Bristol to Split. It is easy to get bus from Split to Dubrovnik or should you wish to see some of the coastline or stop at one of the islands you can get ferry from Split to Dubrovnik and vice versa.

|||

Thanks for your help.

|||

Hey guys!

I just wanted to let you know about a site i%26#39;ve been using for a few months now,i came across it one day as i was browsing over the net.

It%26#39;s a site created by a fired travel agent now making his money telling everyone how to get dirt cheap flights(up to 75% off).At first i didn%26#39;t believe it and thought it was the usual old blurb trying to get you to buy something totally useless over the net,but trust me it does!!

It%26#39;s been very usefull these past few months as i%26#39;m actually travelling at the moment.

I won%26#39;t say anymore cos it seems like everyone is always trying to sell you stuff over the net nowadays,just that it%26#39;s 24 dollars(about 20 euros) very well spent,

The link is %26lt;a href=%26quot;http://guddealz.session99.hop.clickbank.net/%26quot; target=%26quot;_top%26quot;%26gt;Click Here!%26lt;/a%26gt;

Dubrovonik to Korcula

I am arriging in Dubrovonik on the 3rd September and want to get up to Korcula, would it be possible to hire a car to drive up the coast and get a ferry across, does anyone know of a car hire company, thanks

|||

On some days there is a direct ferry from Dubrovnik to Korcula. It takes 3 hrs.

|||

I just checked it for you,

on Sept.3 there is one ferry going via Mljet

DUBROVNIK 03.09.2008 08:30

SOBRA (MLJET) 03.09.2008 10:25

SOBRA (MLJET) 03.09.2008 10:40

KORČULA 03.09.2008 12:40

|||

thanks very much for checking that, unfortunately we wont get to Dubrovonik on time for that, would we be able to hire a car at the airport and drop it off somewhere up along the coast, i think there is a ferry from Orebic to Korcula that we could get

|||

you can check the ferries over this website

http://www.jadrolinija.hr

Of course you can hire a car at Dubrovnik airport,

but I am not sure, where you can drop it on your way.

|||

Try Sixt in Dubrovnik for car hire. You could rent the car, drive to Orebic and then take the car on a ferry to Korcula. Maybe check with the company to see if there is a place you can drop it off in Korcula or Orebic for that matter. Good luck!

|||

thanks i will check that out

What do people suggest is the very best restaurant in Split? I%26#39;m planning on proposing to my girlfirend so it has to be extra special.

Many thanks

|||

Grašo just across the ACI Marina!

|||

Maybe Le Monde in Varos

|||

My favorites are:

1. Adriatic Aci Graso (http://tinyurl.com/6rvogz)

2. Restaurant Bota Sare (www.bota-sare.hr/split_bacvice.html)

3. Le Monde in Varos (Plinarska 6, 021/322-264)

Visas for Coratia

Hi, does anyone know if Visas are required to get into Croatia? My husband holds a South African passport and I hold a British one, we are both living and working in Dubai right now.

If one is needed are they easy to get? We are looking at travelling at the end of Sept. How easy is it to travel to other places whilst there on the one visa (if required)?

|||

South Africans need visa, Britons don’t.

http://www.mfa.hr/MVP.asp?pcpid=1615

Croatia does not have an embassy in the UAE, the one in charge is in Cairo.

Best Sandy Beaches

I am looking into a holiday in croatia with the family (including a 15 month old baby). Therefore, we want a bit of life, some beautiful scenery, good, reasonbaly priced restaurants and ideally a villa on a sandy beach (sandy beach important) - any suggestions?

Cheers,

|||

Maybe some of the following:

Island Rab Lopar

Island Korcula Lumbarda

Island Hvar Hotel Hvar (ex hotel Mina)in Jelsa

Crikvenica

Google the above names and see for accomodations.

It is a bit late for this season to find free acc. at the beach.

make sure your do your research re. sandy beaches - sometimes they can be hard to find around the dubrovnik /dalmatia areas. Lots have just pebbles, or some have just great big concrete slabs with loungers on them. Others just have a ladder going down into very deep water.

|||

Whales, the above that I named are real sandy beaches and do not match your description.

|||

Have a look on www.croatian-beaches.com

|||

jelsa

I am just alerting bargain-hunted to do research if she is looking for sandy beaches - if you check the post she lists it as very important.

Just don%26#39;t want her to think that whereever she goes, she will have a sandy beach - she won%26#39;t.

She doesnt mention exactly where she is going in Croatia - so I just wanted to alert her. No harm in her being aware about the beach situation.

|||

Neither do I, I mentioned just few REAL sandy beaches.

Bargain, when my kids were little I avoided sandy beaches , because there are many bacteries in the warm and damp sand. At least, don%26#39;t let the little ones sit down naked.

|||

okay great - so whats the problem?

|||

I don%26#39;t see any, do you?

For me the best of the best sandy beaches is on island Susak, but no villas etc.

|||

no, I thought you did LOL

breakfasts in cavtat

I%26#39;m staying in an apartment in Cavtat but can someone tell me if the local cafes etc are good value for breakfasts.Any suggestions most welcome.

|||

I don%26#39;t know anything particularly for Cavtat, but if the owners live in the same house, they can offer breakfast. On island Hvar it is about 6-7 EUR/person and you can agree about what do you want for your breakfast.

|||

there are plenty of cafes , also a lovely bakery with chairs and tables outside so you can enjoy freshly baked pastries and coffee . We had a favourite cafe the name escapes me but its just at the start of the harbour looking towards dubrovnik . lovely comfy chairs , fantastic view and shaded by a large tree , once you sit down you wont want to move !

Hi all

we are now getting a bit desperate as our holiday is getting closer. we are attending a wedding on the isl of solta. and need 2 nights accomodation for 2 people. the wedding is in maslinica, and so we want to stay in that village. our requirement is air con and own bathroom. we do not have a preference, an apartment , or a room. i have searched the web and have not found anything. any help would be wonderful.

i did think id hit gold with a hotel called Avlija , but hit a wall when i tried to sesrch it.

|||

Hotel Avlija is no longer; today it’s refurbished: shines and operates under the new name, Martinis Marchi.

http://www.martinis-marchi.com/eng/index.htm

Google found a few agencies offering Solta accommodation

http://www.soltatours.net/eng/index.htm

|||

thank you , that hotel is actually where the reception is !

as or the agency you so kindly found. we already tried them and they had no availability !

|||

Sounds like fun, having the reception in that hotel – it really looks breathtaking on these photos

Sorry to hear about the acc difficulty. Try these (several villages on Solta island in the offer); however it looks acc in Maslinica is pretty full.

thank you for your help zagrebresident. do you think it would be madness to take an apartment without air conditioning? we are going end of august.

|||

Hard to tell. No, I wouldn’t call it madness, the summer temperature peak ends around mid August around here.

Still, if you can choose, take one with a/c.

Location..location...location

My Girlfriend and I will be arriving in Dubrovnik at the beginning of October and would like to rent an apartment. We are both in our 40%26#39;s and would like a place with a view and close to the sights restaurants etc. When looking at apartment prices it seems that those in the old town are cheaper than those outside the city walls....Why the difference and does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

|||

Do send enquiries asking for all the costs. Somebody writes the total price incl.taxes , and somebody shows just the net price and than ads tax, surplus for A/C etc.

|||

Inside the town the rooms will often be very small and you will not have a view. Just outside the gates and up the hill a bit has great views of the city, the sea etc. I used one at the start of last October that was in such a position - only problem was the many steps up.

|||

Thanks for the info!!

|||

try apartment Nerio (top floor) next to Pucic Palace overlooking a nice square; close to everything in old town; we just stayed there a couple of nights in July and the location was jusr fantastic

Daytrips from Dubrovnik..., beaches & hiking w. kids?

Hi. We%26#39;re traveling to Dubrovnik in late Aug/early Sep and staying in the Old Town for about a week. We have two kids (ages 10 %26amp; 7). We%26#39;ll have a car. I%26#39;m wondering if anyone can offer advice on:

1. Beaches to visit. I%26#39;ve checked out the croatia-beaches.com site. Any opinions on Copacabana, Lapad, and Kolocep? How long a drive to Kolocep?Does one have to pay to use the beach? Will the beaches be crowded in early Sep?

2. Day trips %26amp; hiking. I%26#39;m looking for some easy hikes to do with the kids outside the town. Any in the area?

3. Is the ferry landing located north of Old Town, as Google maps seems to suggest? We%26#39;ll be arriving from Bari.

4. Any wineries in the country to recommend?

5. Montenegro - worthwhile to visit? If so, where?

Many thanks

|||

A nice day trip is to the island of Mjlet which is a national park. You can catch a hydrofoil from the main harbour in Gruz, this only leaves at 9.00 in the morning (well it did when we visited a few years back) and returns at 6.30 in the evening. If you do go here make sure you get your ticket to the harbour of Ploce as the other harbour Sobre is on the other side of the island.

It has a series of islands on the island and you get boats from one to the other.

You can also hire kyaks on the lakes on the island.

I would bring a packed lunch with you as there were no cafe%26#39;s etc.. when we were there apart from a restaurant and a small shop when you arrive off the hydrofoil. But if you missed this there was nothing on any of the small islands.

|||

I really like Banje Beach, which is pretty close to the Old Town. On that beach there will be a part that you can pay for chairs, or it will be free on the other part, but here you will have to put your towel down on the pebbles. I love Banje Beach! I love to swim out to the buoys and gaze over at the Old Town Walls.

You also might want to look into taking a day trip to the Island of Lopud--- there is a nice sandy beach here called Sunj.

For wineries you could look into driving up the Peljesac Peninsula.

I think it would be worthwhile to look into day trips into Montenegro and also into Mostar in Herzegovina.

|||

Copacabana is quite nice...very laid back and not to crowded (cafe at the beach serves great salads). St Yacob beach is also nice (note there are a lot of stairs to access the beach!). Nice day trip is to Cavtat - can take a boat trip there from the old town harbour.

|||

Thank you, everyone. I appreciate the advice.

|||

Hello again. I%26#39;ve just learned that we%26#39;ll be unable to park our car in the apt. we%26#39;re renting in the Old Town. Can anyone tell me what%26#39;s the best way to arrange for parking if we%26#39;re staying here? Any lots or garages that might be walking distance from the Town and reasonably priced?

Thanks!

|||

I am not aware of any garages or parking places that you can use while there. Are you going to other places other than Dubrovnik? Could you possibly do without the car until you are leaving Dubrovnik?

|||

Our plan is to remain in Dubrovnik for our entire stay and use it as a base for day trips, with maybe an overnight trip at some point. So while we may be able to do without a car for maybe half the trip, at some point we%26#39;re gonna need one.

|||

I think you%26#39;ll be able to manage without a car. I was there with three friends and none of us drove and we did day trips to Mjlet, Lokrum, Cavtat.

The old town itself is walled and there are no cars at all, the only car I saw on both my trips was a wedding car dropping the bride off to one of the churches.

|||

Sorry, we also mangaged to use public transport to bring us to the town of Brela, and then back to Makarska to catch the ferry to Brac. And once on Brac we used the local transport to get to our resort.

|||

I agree that you should try to do the trip without the car. Maybe you can look into getting a car on the days you need one, or just look into public transport.

laundromats

Can anyone tell me where I can find laudromats in Split and Hvar. Thank You

|||

There must be some in center of Split, and in Hvar there is one in križna Luka, but I don%26#39;t know if it is self service.

|||

lifejacketadventures.com/laundrette/laundret…

|||

Thanks so much for your help. Do you think I might have better luck in Dubrovnik? Here in the US there are always laundromats near the marinas - for the boaters. Thank you

|||

The laundry Modrulj in Split is 5 minutes walk from the city harbour; it%26#39;s behind the St. Frane church which is very close to the Diocletian%26#39;s Palace; just cross the Marmontova Street and you%26#39;re there

bye

Ive heard the coaches can get pretty crowded so I wanted to pre-book my seats now to ensure I had a seat however I cant find any website that will allow me to book tickets.

Can anyone help??

|||

Organic food / market / farm in Zagreb area

Also looking for organic food...

Thanks again!

|||

Food sold on open markets is often organic though our farmers usually do not mark it. There is one open market, Dolac, right off the main square.

There are food stores I know of selling organic products, called Bio %26amp; Bio, with several stores in Zagreb center (Jurisiceva Street, Ilica Street etc).

Stores addresses at the page top:

http://www.biovega.hr/Default.aspx?tabid=30

About:

www.biovega.hr/Default.aspx?tabid=175#eng

|||

I found a few farms in Zagreb surroundings that also do organic products delivery (had no idea something like this exists around here to be honest).

Farma Sever sells its produce on Zagreb Dolac and Tresnjevka markets Fri and Sat 8 – 13 hrs.

http://www.eko-sever.hr/onama/gdjesmo.html

(the site says they will not deliver in the period of Aug 4 – 18 (vacations).

Other one is Bio-Zrno, east of Zagreb, not far from Vrbovec. They offer tourist services as well (visits, a kind of food therapies etc)

4th day-day trip top islan Drvenik with a ferry from Trogir/ ferry from Split to Hvar

5th day-Primošten or Šibenik or enjoy a da in Trogir

You will love the town, it is very small and it takes Yoou half hour to go all around. It is full of narrow streets, and it is the charm of the town to get lost in it. For anything mor I can do, I am here for You,

Hi. My family and I just returned from a week stay in Croatia. We spent only 2 days in Trogir and would have loved to have more!!! You will love it! Since we only had two days we did not travel much from Trogir but we did go to Krka National park which was a highlight of our trip as well! You have many options once you get to the park but you can spend as little as 2 hours up to 8+ depending on what you would like to do there. To visit the island monestary would take a good 4+ hours so we did not get to do that but I am sure it would have been fantastic. We went into the park where there is a long winding path through the woods past various small ponds, lakes, and small falls which finally led to the main falls. Beautiful. Not sure how the weather will be in October but the day we were there was 30+ and it felt great to swim at the base of the falls. (Mid-July and the water was freezing still, but invigorating). The route from Trogir to Krka is beautiful and you do pass many quaint cities. We did stop at Primosten which some have mentioned. Well worth the stop. Charming and fun to just walk around the old city. If you want to you can take a quick swim as well. Worth walking up to the church at the top of the hill and look out over the water! (Don%26#39;t forget that if you are in beach clothes you won%26#39;t be able to enter the church)

You will not be disappointed in Trogir we loved it!!!!!

It is charming, clean, and most of all the service is top notch! I can say enough good things about our stay with them! Have a great trip!

Apartmani Lucia,Seget Vranjica,Trogic - do u have some info?

Hi, me and my friends (around 16-18 people) are thinking about renting apartments Lucia in Seget Vranjica in Trogir.

Is here someone who know about this villa or location? Do you think it is suited for group of young people who want to rest in a day and have some fun during the night?

|||

Hi,

I don%26#39;t know anything about the apartment, but if you want to have some night life you%26#39;ll have to rent a car; Seget Vranjica is about 5 km away from Trogir, so if you decide to rent a car, go to Trogir in the evenings and afterwards go to the best discotheque in Dalmatia %26quot;Aurora%26quot; which is close to Primosten; just pay attention, because in Croazia the alcohol tolerance is %26quot;zero%26quot;

bye

jeanne

|||

Good advice, but if they are going to the Aurora, why not just stay in Primosten and rest during the day and hit the Aurora during the night and not have to worry about a longer drive after partying?

|||

I agree with Barry; Primosten is nice; there is a very cute bar - Popaye; Aurora is a couple km away from Primosten

have a good time

Appartments in Trogir or Split

We will be taking the bus from Plitvic Park and heading to Split and we will be looking for a romantic place to spend a few days. We aren%26#39;t sure whether we want Trogir, Split, Sibenik??? Any suggestions of a nice place (probably appartment style) where we could stay for a few days? We would love to have a homebase for about 4 or 5 days where we can head to different islands and explore some of the cities.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

The honeymooners

|||

If the choice is between those three cities I would say stay in Trogir. But Split is more convenient to take day trips out to the islands. I wouldn%26#39;t consider Split as romantic as Trogir though.

From Dubrovnik to Athens

I%26#39;m trying to get the best way (fastest and cheapest) from Vienna-Dubrovnik and then from Dubrovnik-Athens or Vienna-Athens and then Athens-dubrovnik. Anybody can help me ? Thanks

|||

There are no direct flights between Athens and Dubrovnik, so you%26#39;ll have to use a connecting flight through another European city.

For further information have a look at the Dubrovnik airport timetable on the following link which will give you information about the routes and airlines available

airport-dubrovnik.hr/images/stories/flightsc…

Have a good trip.

rovinj

Hi

Have just booked apartment in rovinj in august.

Dont know what to expect with respect to price of food, drink and eating out etc.

could anyone give me an idea of what i can expect for my money?

Any advice would be much appreciated

Also any tips on things to do would be welcome.

Have read about the festival at the end of august..anyone been there for that?

Look forward to hearing from anyone.

Dave.

|||

Spent 3 days in Rovinj in mid may of 2008. Found the area very beautiful. Beaches are rocky, clear water. Prices for food seemed resonable with much emphasis on fresh veggies and seafood. Lots of pasta dishes. People are friendly and helpful for the most part and most speak English. We were outside of town but within walking distance of most everything. A scooter would be a good mode of transportation. The streets in the old section were being rebricked and cobbled, they should be done by the time you go. The pictures you have probably seen will be real when you get to the port of Rovnj. Like they come alive!! Hope you have a great time. We did. and I would return ....Norma

|||

Hi norma,

Thanks for the information, looking forward to our holiday, looks like a beautiful place.

Dave

|||

Hi Dave,

My boyfriend and I booked an apartment near the Adriatic Hotel (overlooking the harbour) in July 2006. We had a fantastic time, Rovinj is beautiful - you won%26#39;t be disappointed. We booked flights with Flyglobespan and flew into Pula, and took a taxi from Pula airport to Rovinj.

There%26#39;s a small grocery store just round the corner from the Adriatic Hotel, prices are not too bad, and if you walk further up that street there%26#39;s a bakery shop and a market that sells fresh fruit and veg. Be warned though - there are two prices going on in the market - a tourist price and a local price! There%26#39;s also a supermarket near the bus station - head towards the sea and it%26#39;s on your left.

There are lots of nice places to eat in Rovinj and one of my favourites was %26#39;Neptune%26#39; - the food and service were great - try the gravy baked beans! There are lots of great ice creams shops along the front too.

You can go on day trips to Venice from Rovinj (in July 2006 it cost £40). We hired a car and went down to Plitvice Lakes National Park. It is an incredible place but it took about 5 or 6 hours to get there. Other nice places to visit are Pula (the bus to Pula was dirt cheap at that time)and Porec. In our hire car, we toured around lots of small villages too.

If you want to do something really memorable while you%26#39;re there, go to the roman ampitheatre in Pula (not far from the bus station). They have concerts/drama productions on there and the atmosphere is just wonderful (they had a production of Swan Lake on when we were there). It can be quite expensive to get tickets though.

Pula also has lots of nice places to eat - we grabbed a quick bit in a wee cafe called Garfields (near the market). The veggie sandwiches are to die for (and they%26#39;re cheap!).

Enjoy!

Dubrovnik Old Town accommodation.. special needs

We are arriving Dubrovnik approx May 1/09 for 4 nights. Have been researching to find B%26amp;B or studio apt. within Old Town walls. We require 2 single or double regular beds for very tall guests (open ended beds) Sofa beds are all that is offered as 2nd bed on accom. sites. We also would like to have a small terrace. Easy accessability to property is required.

Also, if B%26amp;B what is the usual breakfast that is offered..and is the coffee most likely to be Nescafe and not brewed.

Thank you for any help re our special travel requirements.

|||

It%26#39;s not in the Old city, but it%26#39;s very close with easy access and a big terrace and a garden:

Transportation from Split to Orebic

I arrive in Split at ferry dock, am debating taking a bus or renting a car to drive to my hotel in Orebic. Does anyone have any advice? I am having trouble finding driving directions, advice on that too? Would love any tips on anything about Croatia travel. THANKS! HVALA!

|||

I saw online that there is a bus that goes from Split to Korcula everyday, but it leaves at 1 am, so that isn%26#39;t going to be too good for you.

There also looks like there is a dailt catamaran from Split to Korcula---

korculainfo.com/ferries/catamaran-korcula.htm

You would have to take this and then take the ferry across to Orebic, which is a very short ride.

The other option is to rent the car and drive the coast, either up the Peljesac peninsula, or drive to Ploce and take a ferry to Trpanj, then take the short drive from Trpanj to Orebic.

Would like to depart for Dubriovnik from Korcula late in the afternoon of 7 Sept. Advice from hotel conflicts with bus timetable downloaded. So please can someone tell me: are there busses that run late afternoon and on a Sunday?

Many thanks in advance.

From the following site it looks like on Sundays the bus will leave at 645 am and also at 245 pm.---

Maybe someone else can verify that?

Arrive on time in Split from Dubrovnik?

Hi, final destination of 10 my day trip to Croatia is Dubrovnik. I plan to arrive on 7th Sept and have to be back in Split on 10 Sept to catch flight departing at 12 pm. Can I risk taking the early bus from Dubrovnik (5am) to Split - or is it cutting it too fine? That is, should I take the bus to Split the eve before: 9th of Sept? (Leaving me precious little time to explore D :-( )

Advice would be much appreciated.

|||

I would take the bus to Split the night before and actually spend the last night in Trogir before heading to the airport. I think the 5 am bus will get you there in time for a noon flight, but thats without any glitches in your travel. Plus you would not only have to get to Split, but also get to the airport from Split. Me- I would play it safe and arrive the night before, spend a relaxing night in Trogir and then head to the airport.

|||

Hi Barry thanks again, but Trogir is actually beyond Split... Am I missing something?

|||

Or is Trogir just so much nicer than Split, which to be quite honest I am merely using as base for arrival and and departure?

If so, can you recommend somewhere to stay in Trogir?

|||

The airport is actually closer to Trogir than Split. Thats why I thought it might make more sense to go there.

|||

And I do think that Trogir is a much nicer place to stay!

brtonigla

is anyone familiar with this town?? what trips can we take from there and what is not to be missed? if you go to slovenia, is it hard to get in and out/?thanks

|||

Brt-o-nigla is not on a typical tourist front line but has a bits of typical Istrian charm.The whole peninsula is your playground even more if with hired wheels.See everything around...start with Buje,Groznjan,Motovun.In Slovenia check Piran,rolling hills between Koper and Croatian border...Skocjan or Postojna caves.

Italian border is unmanned/abandoned making Slovenia,European Union migration wall but getting to/from it is absolutely friction free.

|||

thanks so much. So there isn%26#39;t much to do in Brtonigla? We do have wheels. Any idea about the time to get to some of these places. Which should be higher on the list? thanks again

|||

I like the idea of Postojna.. a neat cave!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postojna_Cave

Also near Postojna is a castle called Predjama... another nice place to visit and its only a few km from Postojna.

http://www.castles.nl/eur/sl/pj/pj.html

Viamichelin says that the trip from Brtonigla to Postojna is just 86 km.

|||

Do I take it that you are staying in Brtonigla? We were there a couple of weeks ago. Hardly a town, more a sleepy village. It%26#39;s claim to fame is Hotel San Rocco (perhaps you are staying there) with it%26#39;s well known restaurant. If you have a car then there%26#39;s plenty of interesting places to see around. My suggestions would be Groznjan, Motovun (very touristy but well worth it for the views)and Rovinj further South but a must IMO, and perfectly doable with a car. Can%26#39;t give you advice on entering and leaving Slovenia as we haven%26#39;t done it for some time. In fact there are lots of places but these 3 would be my first choices. Depends on how long you are staying and when.

|||

To answer your 2nd query - No, I think not a lot to do in Brtonigla

|||

yes, we are staying at the san rocco. plan on doing a few of the trips commented on here and thanks, i will have to do some searching on driving times. Thanks so much, any other suggestions? are there any other places to eat in brotonigla? besides the famous restuarant?

cottage/villa by sea near Split?

Can anyone help me find a nice cottage/villa to rent for next summer (2009)? I%26#39;ve looked at agencies, but haven%26#39;t found anything yet.

We do not want an apartment in a tourist complex with water sports etc, but really a quiet, special place near the sea, maybe rustic style? Pool not necessary, but hopefully not very far from Split airport (2 hrs max?). Maybe Brac, Hvar, Ciovo...?

Best Restaurants in Porec & Area.......

Hi Everyone...

I%26#39;m visiting Porec at the end of August for 10 Nights and although we are staying Half Board we would also like to sample a few good Restaurants during our Stay. I%26#39;ve heard that there are lots of Touristy Places which I want to avoid - I would prefer good local food or Italian?

Does anyone have any recommendations for restaurants in Porec %26amp; the surrounding area? The Names and Location would be a great help so I can make a list!

Thanks

|||

If you don’t mind forking over some cash at a higher end restaurant around Porec, I would HIGHLY recommend the restaurant %26quot;Morgan%26quot; in Brtonigla (close to Buje). Another place you might like is %26quot;Viking%26quot; on the Limski Kanal, which is just south of Porec. A warning though- I would stay away from the raw oysters at Viking. I had a serious case of food poisoning from them which lasted 2 days. Otherwise, everything else there was great.

|||

Hop on the ferry for a short ride to the island S.V.Nikola, there is a good restaurant of the same name there. About 2 miles north of town is Dvi Murve, a good traditional place.

|||

Thanks Guys - Look forward to trying out these recommendations (I%26#39;ll stay away from the Oysters!!)

Keep them coming.........

|||

If your staying half board and want something like pizza for lunch we always go to Nono%26#39;s. Seems like the best Pizza restaurant around, often have to wait for a table, but its the first place I visit whenever I find myself in Porec.

Sobe Marija Split...or other reasonably priced accomodation

Has anyone stayed at Sobe Marija in Split. Came across the place on the travel-tourist.com web site. Looking for something clean, reasonably priced, and centrally located for our two night stay.

thanks

Hello Allanc,

Did you end up staying at Sobe Marija? I%26#39;m also looking for places to stay for our upcoming trip to Croatia and would like to try out these private accomodation places. Let me know if you had a good experience at Marija or, if you stayed somewhere else, what you thought of it. Thank you!

We will not be going until mid Sept. Spending time in Korcula and Dubrovnic, then back to Italy via Bari. If it is not too late for you, I will post after our stay.

Miljanic apartments - Cavtat

Hi

Ive had several PMs lately asking me about our stay here - generated by the pics I have posted re Cavtat. I thought it might be useful to post my last response

We loved our stay at the appartments. I think the apartments may vary slightly - they also have rooms within the building .The one we stayed in had a mezzanine floor - with double bed and wardrobe - the air con unit was up here and worked well. Very clean throughout. Downstairs there is a very basic kitchenette - ok for breakfast ,snacks and drinks but not really suitable for cooking a full meal. There is also a sofa which converts to a bed , TV and separate shower and loo. Small balcony - with table and chairs overlooking the smaller harbour, lovely unrestricted views. Cavtat itself is lovely - lots of restaurants to eat out with varying prices and a few bars . There are also two / three good restaurants in the hills behind Cavat. The larger harbour - Marina area attracts some fab boats. There are several different swimming spots all around the penisulas -- great for walking/ jogging, the beaches are stone which means clear sea - ( No real sand beaches anywhere in this area of Croatia although there are some sandy beaches on nearby islands) The best feature of the Miljanic appts is that they are extremely well located , central and at sea level , the resort of Cavtat is very hilly and much ( not all) of the other apartment accomodation is not as central and up on the hillsides. It is easy to get to Dubrovnilk - bus or water ( approx 40mins). There are several tour agencies in village so it is easy to book onto tours if thats what you want. ( We went on a white water rafting trip - brilliant day out ) Also car and boat hire in Cavtat itself. There is some, limited shopping. All in all I am glad we chose Cavtat rather than Dubrovnik as our base.

The owners of the Miljanic are lovely - no problem paying the deposit up front - they collected and took us back to the airport. Our son stayed with us , deciding at the last minute , which meant that he was on a different flight - this was no problem and they took him to the airport for us after we left . There is a bar below the apartment - mostly used by people staying and some locals - closed about 12pm - no noise issues at all. In fact much of Cavtat - closes around 12pm although a few bars stay open longer.

Overall Cavtat is a low key resort - with good access to Dubrovnik -if you want nightlife/ shopping maybe its not for you. The Miljanic is not luxury - but clean, good air con, nice owners and fab location.

I would definately stay there again.

podgora early october

Hi all

going to podgora in 1st week of october what are the %26quot;must see%26#39;s

should i hire a car?

how setteled is trhe weather(will i need my coat!?)

will resturants etc be closing down

thanks in advance

Edd

|||

Is there nothing there?

or has nobody been?

also thinking of visiting Mostar, would it be better to go on an organised trip or DIY

thanks

EDD

|||

hi edd,

podgora is a beautiful towm 7km from makarska. if you want a quiet place to relax, this is definitally a place to visit. october weather can be very nice, sunny with a few scatered showers (only occasionally). the temp still in 20-s C, you don%26#39;t need a coat, not until december. if you can, hire a car, but must point out, the roads are not the best, the motorway is built only from zagreb to sestanovac, which is 20 km north from makarska so if you are driving to dubrovnik or any place south of podgora you%26#39;ll be on jadranska magistala, it%26#39;s a main road all along croatian coast.

the restaurants in podgora will not close down in oct as many hotels are open all year round and also there are lots of people who live in podgora permanently. all beaches in podgora are lovely but my favourite one is the one near hotel minerva.in the evening go for evening walk along the promende, have a drink at the local bar or a dinner at a local restaurant. the best restaurant (in my opinion) is %26quot;neretvanka%26quot;, near tourist office, but there are many great fish restaurants in the port serving great seafood.lots of locals are fisherman so the seafood in the restaurants is always fresh and good quality.also in the evening or early morning go for a stroll to the monument just above podgora, it%26#39;s a great walk, no traffic, great views. podgora is a small town but still, you can find a pharmacy, post office, bank, cinema, all in the town centre.makarska is only 7km away so yo can always go there for more entertainment, shops ets.if you want to travel to other places in croatia, i would recommend going to dubrovnik, it%26#39;s beautiful city, lots to see and explore, 2 hours on the bus (buses are very frequent and cheap), it could be a great day out if you set off early in the morning.if you have time take a ferry to hvar or brac (islands), in summer there are organised daily tours from podgora but am not sure in oct, check with the tourist office, they%26#39;ll be able to help you. croatia has mora than 1200 islands and they are the most beautiful part of the country, make sure you visit at least one of them while there. the ferry to brac or hvar is less than 2 hours journey, well worth visiting.also visit split, i presume you%26#39;ll be flying to split on your way to podgora, i suggest combine visiting split on your way back to the airport (it%26#39;s 50km from podgora), spend a day visiting diocletian palace, have a coffee at %26quot;luxor%26quot; (just opposite the palace) and go for a walk around the city.

as for visiting mostar, it is a very interesting city to see, you%26#39;ll get a mix of western and otoman arhitecture and there are lots of places to see, especially near the old bridge and the market nearby, however the city is now %26quot;devided%26quot; in a way, there are still many building in ruins or just abandoned, just a sad reminder of the war. if you go to mostar make sure you check the visa requirements as mostar is in bosnia %26amp; hercegovina not in croatia. if in mostar try their famous burek and cevapcici from any street vendor or a restaurant, it%26#39;s delicious. the coffee is a must in a local cofe shops next to the old bridge and the market.people in mostar and in whole of bosnia and hercegovina love there coffee and it%26#39;s almost a ritual as they drink it for hours.

overall croatia is a great place to visit, the nature and the views are stunning, unspoilt and people are friendly and helpful.

hope my repy was helpful. enjoy your stay.

|||

In terms of Mostar, I would say take a car there if at all possible. Then you can go at your own pace and stop whenever, wherever you want. Make a stop at Pocitelj, a picturesque town on the Neretva on the way.

|||

bb_la_mer

thanks very much for taking the time to reply your information both interesting and useful, given me a few things to think about

thanks again

hi edd,

you are welcome. i spent many summer holiday in podgora and always had a great time with my friends %26amp; family.

hope you enjoy your stay

one day trips from Pula to Venezia and Brijuni

Hi, everyone,

We will arrive in Pula on Saturday, August 16, by car, from Krk. We would like to stay 3 days and go to Porer, Brijuni National Park and Venezia.

Does anyone know if there are one day trips to Brijuni and Venezia on Sunday or Monday? Our travel agency, organizes this trips only from Tuesday to Friday.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Have a nice summer!

Dori

|||

Both Brijuni %26amp; Venice are %26quot;open%26quot; every day so hopefully there should be an agency that operates on those days too.However,going on your own is not a big deal since you already have a car.

For Brijuni,you have tio drive 10 minutes.Just ask any agency (or try yourself) to pre-book a transport/boat from Fazana at 052 525 888.(You may skip the booking but expect a bit of the hassle from nasty Diabolic Duo.)

234km for the Venice may seem a lot but it%26#39;s mainly a motorway.Behind a wheel is not as nice as on the boat deck but you have a full time frame freedom.To avoid road congestion go to Venice on Monday.Alternative is to drop a car at Trieste and than catch a 2hr train to Venezia Santa Lucia (via Venezia Mestre)

On a way to/from Porec stop at Rovinj.You will not regret it.

venezialines goes on tuesdays , fridays and sundays .

the catamaran trip takes just over two hours , from pula harbor at 8am . return is at 5pm and you arrive in pula before 8pm . price per adult is 520 kuna or 71 euro , you%26#39;ll have to book a week in advance though to be sure , as july and august trips tend to be full well in time .

|||

Thanks a lot! :)

You really gave me some helpfull info. The good news is that there are some alternatives, for this trips, as I expected and as it is normal, after all....

Anyhow, before arriving to Pula, we will stay 6 days in Njivice, on Krk island, so we will try to make some reservations from there.......or....finally we will go by car....

Nevertheless, we will not miss Rovinj ;)

Could you recommend me some nice accomodation in Pula? 2 persons...

Thank you once again and we will come back with pictures and impressions!!

Dori

|||

you have a pm dori4 , if you need help to book the venice trip on sunday august 17th .

Booking Blue Line Ferry ahead

We%26#39;re planning to ferry from Split to Ancona via Blue Line (with car) at 21:00 on Sept 12. Do we need to book onine ahead? Or is it safe to buy tickets in Split earlier that evening? And ... if it%26#39;s best to book ahead - how soon should I get it done? Our schedules aren%26#39;t iron-clad as yet and i am hoping for some flexiblity.

thanks

|||

try this site and ask if there is a need....the argument is will you be inconvenienced if you miss the boat. Nothing wrong with jadrolina so check that as well.

http://www.viamare.com/

|||

Thanks Mausgrass for your reply and this good link. However - I read all through the site as well as the whole Blue Line site - and find no indication that you can purchase tickets at the dock ... when or where. I did read that you need to have them when you check in two hours prior to boarding / loading (with car).

We are planning to go Blue Line because - at the moment - they are the only line sailing from Split to Ancona on 9/12 and we need to be in Italy on the 13th.

Does anyone know if you can just show up at the docks 3-4 hrs prior and still get tickets? Or do I need to order them online ahead to be assured a spot with a vehicle?

Thanks!

|||

You can book them online from the Blue Line website or if you are not fussy about a cabin you can go to the ticket desk at the port and purchase the tickets there.

|||

Thanks Balkan Addict - that helps. Sounds good. I am mostly concerned re: timing ... our plans are not definite so I am hoping I can still get tickets the same day we sail ... kind of last minute (3 - 4 hrs prior) ... instead of booking online ahead. We plan to drive from Dubrovnik to Split earlier the same day ... but we need flexibility in case our schedule changes. Thanks!

Camping in Korcula

My girlfriend and I would like to camp at the Campsite Kalac near the Old Town. I found an online reservation site but am unable to book any date within the next two weeks (and we want to camp 16th and 17th August). Does anyone know whether we will be able to simply turn up at the campsite and camp without a reservation?

Jadrolinija ferry - cabins/berths

We are going to be travelling on the Jadrolinija ferry from Hvar to Dubrovnik in September. This journey takes place during the day. Is it worth getting a cabin still? What are the options if we don%26#39;t? Any recommendations on what is best way to travel on these ferries during day - is about a 7hour journey.

|||

I wouldn%26#39;t pay for a cabin, I would sit out on the deck of the ferry and take in all the sites, go into the restaurant and have something to eat, and go back out onto the deck.

|||

No, as Barry said.

Only if you have in mind certain privacy demanding activities

|||

Well as Jelsa says, it depends how Perky you feel the need to be! It%26#39;s a fantastic journey not to be wasted sitting inside a cabin. Loads of places to sit inside and out. We did Dubrovnik to Split - even longer - take a book, walk around, have a coffee or a meal. Great scenery, you get to admire Korcula, see the Peljesac peninsula etc.

|||

If you are not getting a cabin, do you have to book the ferry between Hvar and Dubrovnik in advance or can you just show up?

|||

No bookings for passengers, only for cars!

Agroturizam

My wife and I will arrive in Pula (from Venice) and stay in Istria for 2 nights in early October. We%26#39;re looking for recommendations for agroturizam accomodations. %26quot;Paladnjaki%26quot; and %26quot;La Casa di Matiki%26quot; in Zminj look pretty good on the web.

Can anyone comment on those or recommend others...?

Thanks,

Jack

|||

looking at review from others who have spend their

time at matiki/zminj it looks like a safe bet .

great prices as well at sonjas .

the downside is that the coast/nearast beaches are

far away , but relaxing at the pool side shouldn%26#39;t

be that bad .

Travelling from Porec to Budapest in September

My husband and I will be travelling from Venice to Porec by Ferry in September and staying a couple of nights in Porec. We need to make our way to Budapest and am wondering the best/most direct way to get there. I have read there are trains from Zagreb which take about 5-6 hours but have heard mixed reviews on how easy it is. Can anyone suggest an efficient way to get to Budapest? many thanks

Travel in May

We will be spending about 10/11 days in Croatia next May, 3rd week into the last week of May. We will ferry over from Venice, rent a car and drive down to Dubrovnik and hopefully see a couple islands.

Will we need to have all of our rooms booked before we go or will we find plenty of places with vacancies? I do plan to book a room in Rovinj for a couple nights since the ferry gets in a little late in the evening. Anything else you can suggest would be appreciated.

Dress code... how should we pack for this trip?

We live in southern usa and I am used to wearing shorts and polo shirts in the warm weather, should I pack a couple pair of jeans?

|||

Booking for May is not required unless you are particular about some aspect of your room--there should be plenty of availability in most places.

Dress code depends on what you are doing--I have visited in May and it can be quite variable--from 90s during day to quite chilly at night. Think layers and then check the weather forecast websites the week before to fine tune your packing.

|||

thanks, not a lot of formal siteseeing...driving the coast, stopping a night or two, walking the towns, visiting a couple islands and beaches, really just a good old fashioned lazy holiday enjoying the sites.

We like to dress casual, easier to pack. What do the Croatians consider casual dress??

|||

dress code is no different in cro than other places , it all depends on the weather .

late may is when the sea temperature starts to rise up to 23 degres and it should not be below 20 outside at nights .

Porta Antica appartments. Any comments?

Hi:

We are going to Rovinj next weekend. It was a last minute decision so we do not have accomodation yet. I found us a falat in Port Antica appartments. Has anyone stayed there? Any idea of the style, location, etc.?

Thanks

Ana

|||

Just back from Rovinj last week and saw the Porta Antica apartments. Ther are RIGHT on the harbour with a great view over the marina and Katarina island. There are bars and restaurants underneath the apartments and all around. perfect location - may be slightly noisy depending on how busy Rovinj is. You will love it. Try the Santa Croce restaurant nearby - fantastic. Enjoy!

|||

Thank you!

|||

how far is it from where you get off ferry?

|||

There%26#39;s two places where you can get off the ferry - the large marina (closer to the larger resorts and hotels) and the quay by the smaller marina, which is closer to the centre of the old town. The Porta Antica apartments are very closer to the second one.

I would say that they are in quite a busy area and there was a bar next door which was playing quite loud music one night, quite late (though it was a bit quieter the following night). This might bother some people, though they did look cute and had a great view. The same people also have apartments called La Carrera which we stayed in, which were also very nice and in a quieter spot, though with no view to the sea.

trogir a big disappointment

Hi we%26#39;ve just returned from two weeks in Croatia. The first week we spent in the idellic Peljesac Penninusla and the second week we were meant to spend in Trogir. We had booked an apartment in Ciovo and arrived there on a Friday. The apartment was beautiful over looking a bay. But we were so disappointed by the crowds of tourists, the penninsula had been so quiet, beautiful uncrowded beaches, we really got to know the locals etc. Trogir in contrast was so overcrowded that we left after a day and went back to our beautiful penninsula.

Trogir I felt was great if you are single and looking for bars and nightlife but for something a bit more off the beaten track it wasn%26#39;t for us. We travelled with our three yr old daughter and seh had a great time, but Trogir was so uncomfortable and not really as friendly as the other areas we%26#39;d been to.

|||

I%26#39;m sorry to hear this. I wonder if the time of year had anything to do with it as the multiple times that I have been to Trogir I have never felt that it had a vibrant night-life, but I have never been in July or August? If you only want beach I wouldn%26#39;t necessarily recommend it in season; Peljesac is definitely much more cut off.

|||

Its a shame you did not like Trogir. We spent 3 nights there last year and found it to be a beautiful town with a very laid back nightlife.

We stayed in the old town itself though which maybe different to Ciovo.

|||

So sorry you had such a disappointing experience! I have never personally been there in high season (always go in Spring or Fall) and that probably has something to do with it. I am definitely not a night-life person and do not find it to be bar place. However, everyone has different experiences and it is discouraging that you found it disappointing. :(

Trogir is not a place I would stay longer than a few nights as there is so much to see and do in the rest of the country. The interior of Istria (the tiny hilltowns) is great to get away for peace and tranquility. It is definitely my favourite place in Croatia.

Would you consider returning to Croatia? Have you been to Plitvice Lakes? Wow - talk about stunning!

|||

sorry you felt like this abour Trogir

We went there last year for 11 days and couldn%26#39;t fault it. our appartment was in ciovo also.

found the local restaurants excellent. went in to the main town afew nights and found that just as good. in fact so good we are returning again this year.

a couple of trips into split also very enjoyable.

Saying all that we haven%26#39;t been to any other part of Croatia

saying that we haven%26#39;t been to any other part of croatia

|||

Every person has a write to say his own opinion.

But the title %26quot; Trogir a big disapointment %26quot; is not apropriate for Trogir Unesco town.

I must say that Trogir and Ciovo is the one of the most visited area in Dalmatia because of the beauty of beaches and historic heritage of Trogir Unesco.

Many celebrities coming there and they are know very well why: few days ago was Michael Schumacher and every summer there is Bernie Ecclestone and many others people from many countries Europe, America, Canada..... who likes this town and area.

Anywhere in the world if you are coming in the high season at the place which is very popular and marked like must see places you can%26#39;t except uncrowded beaches especialy the main beach in Okrug Gornji, empty streets, not to many people.That atmosfere you can find out season in autumn or winter.

Trogir is a great destination for all age groups.

|||

Trogir was our FAVORITE place in Croatia!!!! We just returned from 3 weeks in Europe - 1 week in Croatia where we spent 2 days in Trogir. It truly was one of the highlights of our trip. We stayed in the old city at the VILLA ST. PETAR and would highly recommend this hotel!!!! Outstanding from location, charm factor, cleanliness and a staff that knows what hospitality and service mean!!! Trogir never felt over crowded to us. The old city was a visual masterpiece. It was also a great center point to visit other sites in Croatia. We went to Krka National Park which was also a highlight of our trip. While only the smaller version of Pletjvice Lakes it was still stunning. My husband, myself, and children (ages 11 %26amp; 14) all loved Trogir. We were also in the Peljesac Penninsula and found that beautiful. We however prefered the historical charm of Trogir. We would go back and recommend it to all.

|||

There is a big difference sleeping in island of Čiovo or in the centre of Trogir.

It is true that there%26#39;s a lot of traffic in the island but the appartment owner should told you that before. July and August are high season and is expected to be a lot of tourists! Maybe for You Trogir was dissapointing but not for lots of other guests. Also this could be because You stayed in Trogir/Čiovo for only 1 day, obviously You haven%26#39;t visited old city core...

Bus or Train to Ljubljana

We are taking the ferry from Korcula to Rijeka and then need to catch the bus or train to Ljubljana. Does anyone know how far it is from the ferry port to the bus station or to the train station. Our ferry arrives at 7:00 and we are hoping to make a 8:10 bus and I%26#39;m trying to find out if that is possible. Thanks

|||

Bus terminal is at the other end of the pocket size passenger port,5 blocks away from the ferry....you can make it in 12mins tops.Just follow the sun.

If the bus fails carry on for 17mins in the same sun direction.Jump on 2045 (or 0525) runaway train.

Vis Island

Has anyone been to the island of Vis? I am looking to spend a week there in mid-September. Can anyone suggest any hotels/apartments? Thanks in advance.

|||

I went in September 2006 and it was a real highlight of my Croatian trip. We stayed in Komiza on the other side of the island, a mixture of relaxed and sophisticated. We used a tourist agency called something like Dalic %26amp; Dalic (which was obviously hilarious as it sounded like Daleks!) Visit the Blue Cave. We also saw dolphins on a boat trip from Komiza. The ferry ride over is idyllic as well.

|||

thanks for that. do you know if there are ferries from vis to brac in mid-sept? i am thinking of pit-stopping for a few nights in bol, brac on my way back from vis to split. thanks in advance

|||

No ferries to Brac, you%26#39;d have to pass through Split.

But you MIGHT be able to get direct to Hvar. Check jadrolinija website.

I rented from adria-island.org/en/…vis

|||

Has anyone stayed in one of the Villa Nonna apartments? Are they in a good location? I want to be near good beaches. Any help greatly appreciated.

|||

If you are going to ask about a specific apartment, it helps to post the link and specific location.

All the best beaches on Vis are driving (or scooter rental) distance from Vis or Komiza though.

|||

Has anyone stayed here?

http://www.villa-nonna.com/

Cheers in advance.

|||

Hotel Paula in Vis is ok. Vis is a fantastic island and no matter how long you stay there, you will always say it was too short.

|||

Has anyone been to/stayed in Komiza? Does it have a few nice places to eat or is it very sleepy (mid-sept)? Are the nearby beaces nice? Thanks in advance

|||

The Villa you posted looks really nice. I%26#39;d take it based on the pics.

Both Komiza and Vis will be sleepy in mid-Sept. I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll go wrong in either, but I liked Vis town myself. Komiza had a tiny promenade with a few restaurants.

As I said before, in either place you will want to rent transport of some sort (bike, car, scooter, or boat) to get to better beaches. Both have so-so beaches within walking distance, but it is a waste to go there when truly amazing beaches can be reached.

|||

Thanks Meander. Will defo rent a scooter. Are there any beaches you particularly suggest checking out? Any other tips for things to do on Vis greatly appreciated.
