Am I right in thinking this can%26#39;t be bought in the UK from an ordinary bank or travel agent?

why would you bother to get kunas in uk ?
euros work just fine for the first day or two (taxi, restaurants, pubs, accommodation) until
you use the atm machine , which are available on every corner !

You can get Kuna in the UK but at a poor exchange rate compared with what you get when in Croatia. If you are worried about having a few Kuna when you first arrive then get just enough for a day or two. I think most places offering currency now sell Kuna but they will have to order it for you. The Post Office had one of the best rates when I last checked.

Euro%26#39;s DON%26#39;T work fine for the first few days -= you need Kuna
use an atm when you get there to get your kunas, or you can get them in any bank in the UK. Its a open currency so the banks will have them.
Please dont go over thinking that you will be fine with Euro%26#39;s - you wont. You need Kuna.

Maybe get some kuna in the UK so you have some before you find an ATM in Croatia.

Agree with whales - you can%26#39;t get by with Euro and if you end up changing those as well you will doubly lose out. Marks %26amp; Spencer currency exchange sell kuna and I can order them through Lloyds TSB. However, use a debit/credit card without a commission fee (Nationwide or Post Office) in ATMs in Croatia for the best rates.
