Hi. We%26#39;re traveling to Dubrovnik in late Aug/early Sep and staying in the Old Town for about a week. We have two kids (ages 10 %26amp; 7). We%26#39;ll have a car. I%26#39;m wondering if anyone can offer advice on:
1. Beaches to visit. I%26#39;ve checked out the croatia-beaches.com site. Any opinions on Copacabana, Lapad, and Kolocep? How long a drive to Kolocep?Does one have to pay to use the beach? Will the beaches be crowded in early Sep?
2. Day trips %26amp; hiking. I%26#39;m looking for some easy hikes to do with the kids outside the town. Any in the area?
3. Is the ferry landing located north of Old Town, as Google maps seems to suggest? We%26#39;ll be arriving from Bari.
4. Any wineries in the country to recommend?
5. Montenegro - worthwhile to visit? If so, where?
Many thanks

A nice day trip is to the island of Mjlet which is a national park. You can catch a hydrofoil from the main harbour in Gruz, this only leaves at 9.00 in the morning (well it did when we visited a few years back) and returns at 6.30 in the evening. If you do go here make sure you get your ticket to the harbour of Ploce as the other harbour Sobre is on the other side of the island.
It has a series of islands on the island and you get boats from one to the other.
You can also hire kyaks on the lakes on the island.
I would bring a packed lunch with you as there were no cafe%26#39;s etc.. when we were there apart from a restaurant and a small shop when you arrive off the hydrofoil. But if you missed this there was nothing on any of the small islands.

I really like Banje Beach, which is pretty close to the Old Town. On that beach there will be a part that you can pay for chairs, or it will be free on the other part, but here you will have to put your towel down on the pebbles. I love Banje Beach! I love to swim out to the buoys and gaze over at the Old Town Walls.
You also might want to look into taking a day trip to the Island of Lopud--- there is a nice sandy beach here called Sunj.
For wineries you could look into driving up the Peljesac Peninsula.
I think it would be worthwhile to look into day trips into Montenegro and also into Mostar in Herzegovina.

Copacabana is quite nice...very laid back and not to crowded (cafe at the beach serves great salads). St Yacob beach is also nice (note there are a lot of stairs to access the beach!). Nice day trip is to Cavtat - can take a boat trip there from the old town harbour.

Thank you, everyone. I appreciate the advice.

Hello again. I%26#39;ve just learned that we%26#39;ll be unable to park our car in the apt. we%26#39;re renting in the Old Town. Can anyone tell me what%26#39;s the best way to arrange for parking if we%26#39;re staying here? Any lots or garages that might be walking distance from the Town and reasonably priced?
Thanks!

I am not aware of any garages or parking places that you can use while there. Are you going to other places other than Dubrovnik? Could you possibly do without the car until you are leaving Dubrovnik?
|||
Our plan is to remain in Dubrovnik for our entire stay and use it as a base for day trips, with maybe an overnight trip at some point. So while we may be able to do without a car for maybe half the trip, at some point we%26#39;re gonna need one.
|||
I think you%26#39;ll be able to manage without a car. I was there with three friends and none of us drove and we did day trips to Mjlet, Lokrum, Cavtat.
The old town itself is walled and there are no cars at all, the only car I saw on both my trips was a wedding car dropping the bride off to one of the churches.

Sorry, we also mangaged to use public transport to bring us to the town of Brela, and then back to Makarska to catch the ferry to Brac. And once on Brac we used the local transport to get to our resort.

I agree that you should try to do the trip without the car. Maybe you can look into getting a car on the days you need one, or just look into public transport.
