Hvar - Dubrovnik

Hello,

I am finalizing our travel details for Sept trip. We are staying in Hvar for 4 nights then on to Dubrovnik. In much previous forum I was told to ferry from Hvar-Split then rent a car with sixt.hr and enjoy the drive with no drop off charge. This seems to be the most desireable form of transportation and way to see some sights along the way. The problem is the website only shows rentals from Split airport not town :( Looking at ferries it takes all day. Is the 4 1/2 hour bus the only other option? How far is the drive?

Thanks!

Well actually taking the direct ferry from Hvar Island (from Stari Grad)takes longer than taking the ferry to Split and then a car to Dubrovnik.

I did both options, so I know the exact times.

If you take the direct ferry to Dubrovnik you first need to get to Stari Grad ( 30 min. bus from Hvar Town) and then it takes 6,5 hrs. to Dubrovnik, as you have no car , there is no additional waiting time before.

If you take the catamaran to Split you enter at Hvar Town and it is only 45 Min. to Split. But this catamaran goes only once a day in the early afternoon.

The other option is taking the ferry again from Stari Grad and then 1.45 hrs. to Split.

The drive from the port of Split to downtown Dubrovnik takes 4,5 hrs.,I do not know about the buses.

The ferry trip may take all day but view it as being on a mini cruise - you pass the same lovely coastline that all the big cruise ships charge lots of money for! It%26#39;s a great journey and one I would rather do than the 4 1/2 hour bus ride which I have also done (3 times). To be fair, on the bus you also get great views as the bus grips the coastline and so long as you get the fast, non-stopping bus, it gets there pretty quickly. I have never had the urge to do the drive myself - the road is mainly a single lane for each direction of traffic and there are big trucks and buses all trying to keep to timetables. I didn%26#39;t read the previous post about car rental in Split - is this to avoid the cost of the car on the ferries or because you take the catamaran to Hvar Town? Another point is that that car parking charges in Dubrovnik rival London if you are based centrally - although if you have a hotel with a car park you shouldn%26#39;t need to pay.

Finally, does the rental have to be with Sixt - there are other companies that do have a central Split base?

Thanks for your suggestions Timberlady and Jude :)

I think we will take the ferry. By the time we take cat from Hvar to Split and then drive it is the same time frame with much less hassle. Sounds like it will be more relaxing and scenic especially on deck.

When we travel abroad (except Tuscany) we typically use our legs or public transportation, etc to avoid the stress of car rentals. Also a great way to talk to the locals!

Thanks again, THIS SITE IS THE BEST!

I think this is a very good decision.

On the way you will pass Korcula and see beautiful scenery. Emjoy!

Just make sure that the ferry runs from Hvar to Dubrovnik on that day, since the ferry isn%26#39;t very frequent from Hvar to Dubrovnik.
