My family and I are thinking of flying to Trieste, then getting a hire car and driving to Rovinj in northern Croatia. Trouble is, I have just heard a rumour that one cannot necessarily make the journey in a hire car ie that you get turned back at border control (either, I assume, Slovenia or Croatia). Has anyone heard of this issue? Is it because you have to drive through a slice of Slovenia?
Any help appreciated.

Have to check the hire car conditions of use as it is them that control the travel not border control.
Alternative is to bus to rovinj and then get a car..... no need for a car unless you wish to go rambling as the public transport is good and no need to find parks.

Hello there, we are doing this route in September this year - flying from Birmingham to Trieste then hiring a car and driving to Rovinj - we have done this 5 or more times now. If your booking with Ryanair - then Hertz will allow you to drive into Slovenia/Croatia no problem - also i have just booked with AUTO Europe which are slightly cheaper and they also allow this. Border is no problems - they just let you sail through. Its around 1 and half hour drive to Rovinj thanks greg

Lads, although it is a really thin slice of Slovenia do not fall for 35euro highway sticker.Do alternative roads.(35eur equals 27 pints of supermarket lager and XXL bag of crisps!)
