Group of Guys?

Hi,

I%26#39;m looking for information on Dubrovnik for my Stag Do. There will be roughly 20 guys, looking for some nightlife and a friendly atmosphere.

I know when peolpe here %26quot;stag do%26quot; they think the worst but honestly, we are only looking for some good pubs and nightlife.

Any information would be gratefully appreciated.

Regards

Gab7

|||

Really not sure Dubrovnik is the right place for you. I think you will find a friendly atmosphere, but to me Dubrovnik is a bit laid back. I would rather look into maybe a place like Split or Zagreb.

|||

dubrovnik is definitely not the place for you - its not a stag do kind of place, - the pubs are geared towards a nice meal and a few drinks with music - they are not really geared towards nightclubby atmosphere.

I say keep Dubrovnik for your honeymoon and head to Prague or one of them places that are geared for stags.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

I would like some advice on traveling to this destination. What airport would I best fly to.

I am looking to visit the last week of September.

We would also like to combine to visit the sea in this week visit. We are traveling with a 9 %26amp; 11 year old and would like to snorkel........are there small coves in the area? I see the coast is 200 km from the park.

I suppose it is best to rent a car?

thank you for your information and helpful advice.

Sincerely Cindy and family

|||

Hi Cindy,

The best would be to fly to Zagreb Airport. From Zagreb you can catch a bus to Plitvice Lakes, spend a day or two in Plitvice and continue by bus to the coast.

Since you have kids with you, I would definitively recommend renting a car.

At the moment, weather in Croatia is very much like in summer but that can change in a week or so. It could happen that in late September it would be too cold for snorkel.

Hope it helps.

One day spare in Zagreb

We (me, husband and 9 year old) have a day to fill in - Zagreb, mid October. We will have done a preliminary city tour the day before, but I would like to weigh up the options of taking a tour out of the city (eg Plitvice) with spending time exploring the town itself at a more leisurely pace. Any idea are very welcome.

|||

Here is a useful link:

In Zagreb-walking in the Gornji Grad,Tuškanac, Maximir ZOO, museums...

Outside: Plitvice, Castles Trakošćan or Miljana etc

Look at the above link and choose what would suit you.

|||

Plitvice Lakes or Varazdin are best places for a day trip from Zagreb.

Weather in Oct

Hi all,

We have booked a week%26#39;s break in Dubrovnik in October and were wondering whether the weather would still be warm enough to lie on the beach?

Here is the link:

|||

The weather in October can be great. Spent a lot of time in Split at various times of the year and have swam in April right through to the end of October. Last year in October it was 78 degrees plus for the first two weeks of the month with only the odd cloudy day.

Ferry to Brac and then which bus, which town please?

Hoping to take a day trip from Split. Would like a nice bus ride, good scenery, to a nice town for a nice lunch; good walks and/or maybe a beach - all in a few hours. Please advise someone. Thank you.

|||

If it%26#39;s a one-off visit I would probably go to Bol and see the Zlatni Rat beach. There is a lovely walk to a little monastery which is in the opposite direction from the harbour to the beach (go right, rather than left). There is also a steep walk upwards above the town. However I got a boat over from Hvar so don%26#39;t know details if you arrive at Supetar rather than Bol.

|||

I agree with Bol. It has everything you are looking for. The bus from Supetar (just go to the bus station, it is small, and ask at the info desk which bus) has great views leaving Supetar, travels inland through a few nice villages, and then has spectacular views driving down into Bol. Once in Bol you have the beach (Zlatni Rat), a quaint town with a number of restaurants, and nice harbor, beautiful views, and different areas to walk to (the monastery, Zlatni Rat, etc). I imagine the view coming back in to Supetar would be spectacular as well on your way home.

porec to venice

Any ideas which is the best way?

|||

you can get a ferry but i think they are only something like one a day or every other day. we travelled by car to trieste and then train to venice but that was because we had a lift to trieste, i%26#39;m sure you could get the train

|||

In summer there are heaps of ferries from venice to porec, which takes you directly to the heart of the town. A one way ticket will cost you around $50 Euro. Otherwise, you can fly or train it to trieste and then catch the bus which takes about two hours to get to Porec because of its handful of stops. Hope this helps.

|||

As above, the easiest way is to take one of the excursion trips to Venice. Driving to Venice would take between 3 and 4 hours on a good day - the hydrofoils etc will do it in about 2 1/2.

They aren%26#39;t particularly cheap, but for the lack of hassle involved (they drop you 10mins walk from St Marks Sq), it is worth the cost.

|||

I would not recommend the Venice trip through Atlas. Myself and my girlfriend booked on 21/07/2008. We paid about 60 quid each. Some operators told us that the boat from Porec was full that day but Atlas took our money and agreed to pick us up at the Albatross in Zelena Laguna at 7.00. We got there half hour early and they just never turned up.

At about 7.15 a coach from another company Kompass turned up and the rep contacted Atlas as a courtesy. They told us to get on board with them and then wisked us away to Umag for a completely different and much shorter trip. We have emailed Atlas but have never received an apology or explanation.

Kompass were much more organised, but I still would not recomend seeing Venice this way. You will pay an extra 65 Euros on board the Catermeran for a package which seems good at face value. A gondola ride, taxi boat trip down the Grand Canal and a meal in Venice.

The meal was in a cramped cafe ten to a table. The stater was a handful of Pasta. The main course a slice and a half of meat with half a dozen(literally)chips and a scoup of ice cream for desert. I was convinced they had given me a childs portion. A drink of water was 5 Euros extra and a beer 8 Euros.

All this for about 18 quid. The service was so slow we had to wolf down the meal and run to the Gondola.

The Gondola trip was less than half hour with 6 people to a boat. My girlfriend and I could not even sit together because we had to balance out a portly German guy sat opposite. The Gondoleers far from the cheery seranading images we imagined complained in Italian about having to take us en-mass at the discounted rates they were receiving from the travel companies.

The taxi boat was twelve people in a covered boat. The window was so small it was like looking out of a letter box and we could not take any photos. It was very cramped. We had no time to ourselves and felt rushed all day. We just felt like sheep waiting to be fleeced. This trip does not do Venice justice.

The journey back took about four hours due to rough seas. We were up for seventeen hours and spent about 5 hours in Venice. Better to pay the ferry crossing, get a map and head off yourself or have a weekend there on another trip.

|||

This may not be possible on this trip,but I am flying Birmingham to Trieste, spending two days in Venice then driving to Porec. Trieste to Venice is just over an hour and then Porec I expect between 3 and 4 hours. does,nt realy matter because I will not be in a rush and may stop in Slovenia for lunch.

Chris

|||

Rhia, bus to Trieste and than train to Venice, rather simple.

Blackpool, your Venice report reminds me of a students%26#39; excursion of mine, many years ago, it was exactly as you described, but we were very young,everything was fun, the price of a whole trip (Austria, Switzerland, Italy)was very low. Everywhere else on that trip we got better quality and quantity of meals than in Venice.

luxury apartment or hotel wth balcony/patio in centre?

Hi, please can you reccomend a luxury apartment or hotel wth balcony/patio in centre. Need a great view!!!!

|||

Hi there,

I would speak only of hotels and would recommend, the new Hotel More in Lapad, luxury Importanne hotels in Babin Kuk and Libertas Rixos. They also happen to have great public transport connection to Pile Gate, the Old Town entrance.

Enjoy!

|||

I agree with Dani on this one.

Becase when you say great view I take that you mean the sea, islands, sunset . .

Inside the Old Town, your view is . . . red roofs where ever you look, but that is also charming in a different way . ..

|||

try apartment ankora

If you want a great view go for Dubrovnik Sunshine Apartment Lobrovic. We enjoyed spending out time on the terrace perched so perfectly offering views of the old town and the adriatic riviera! We believe this is probably the only apartment within the walls that is available to tourists offering breath-taking views!

Croatia Family Holiday

Planning a trip to Croatia May 2009 -- two families. Four children under the age of 5. We are hoping to find a 4 bedroom villa on the beach or very close. I believe from Paris we will fly into Dubrovnik. Looking for recommendations on areas/cities/beach and villa rentals. Thanks so much. Texans in Paris.

|||

depending on the level of luxury required, you may get disappointed. Close to the beach, very few properties that can be described as villas can be found. I was, just recently, looking into some properties for my parents%26#39; US friends and they decided to go to Korcula instead of Dubrovnik. They were looking for privacy and we had a hard time finding something that was in line with their request. If interested in this property, being a further away from Dubrovnik, contact me on PM.

|||

I just got back from Dubrovnik, we were staying in the next bay along - Zaton. I probably wouldn%26#39;t recommend the actual place we were staying for children, but further along in Zaton Mali and Zaton Veliki there were loads of fairly large houses on the sea front that said they were for holiday rental. It was about 6km North of Dubrovnik, with a bus service to the city. I%26#39;m not sure if the places are on the internet, but there was a tourist office in Zaton Veliki.

|||

You would be able to find any number of villas on some of the islands such as Vis, Brac, Hvar, etc. Dubrovnik is worth seeing, but if you are looking for a beach vacation, than I would look at one of the islands.

|||

hi be careful where you book as well - make sure you do some researches on the beaches nearby - in some places the beach will only consist of ladders down to deep water - so you will need to ensure that the beach is the one that you want before you book. some people just take it for granted there will be sandy beaches all over - and in some cases there is not. Just something to think about when you are booking.

Help with 2 Centre

Hi

My husband and I are wanting to visit Croatia early September 2009.

I am thinking of trying to organise this myself as i can%26#39;t find the package holiday that fits what we are after.

We definately want to spend a few days in Dubrovnik and combine this with 7 days elsewhere and this is where I need your help.

We want somewhere that is on the coast to relax with plenty of choice of bars and restaurants in the evening. We are in our early 30%26#39;s and not after nightclubs etc but somewhere with a bit of life. We were thinking of Porec but it seems quite a way away from Dubrovnik and quite a hassle to get too.

Does anyone have any suggestions for other resorts that are nearer and easier to get to?

Thanks in advance

Clare

|||

How about Hvar, Trogir or Makarska?

|||

If we were to just base ourselves in a resort for 7 days where would you recommend so that we could still day trip to Dubrovnik?

Thanks

Clare

|||

I really think you should spend at least a couple of days in Dubrovnik. But if not, maybe you should look at spending your time in a resort along the Makarska Riviera, which will get you close enough to take a day trip to Dubrovnik.

|||

The only major island that you could stay on and still day trip to Dubrvonik would be Korcula. But I would sigest 2 days in Dubrovnik and then move to a resort on whatever island, or section of the mainland that appeals toyou most. Look at Vis, Hvar, Korcula, and Brac (islands), or the Makraska Riviera (mainland).

|||

When I visited the area I used Atlas Travel web site address http://www.atlas-croatia.com/en/ who helped me with accommodation and ferries and found the office in Split were extremely helpful and would certainly use them again.

I did a three center holiday arrived in Split spent the first night and then took a ferry to Hvar and then returned to Split and drove down to Dubrovnik.

The island ferries are Jadrolinija see http://www.jadrolinija.hr/ for reference the ferry leaves Hvar early morning for Split and the port is next to the town center.

best beaches

Any suggestions welcome for beaches near Cavtat worth considering.Many thanks

|||

The beaches in Cavtat are mainly concrete, in other words concrete terraces as a result of the hotels and apartments in Cavtat, but don’t worry because there are rocky beaches where you can enjoy the crystal blue sea and even find a hidden corner of your own.

Should you decide to explore the beaches in the area, which are mainly rocky or concrete, each one is special in its own way.

Parking near the island ferry terminal at Gruž in Dubrovnik

Hi everyone,

I heard there is a very big car park at the island ferry terminal (north of Dubrovnik city). Does someone know whether parking there is free or else - how much is costs for a day?

In case it is not free - are there any other parking possiblities in the area of the ferry terminal in Dubrovnik? I want to leave the car there while sailing for 3-4 days in the car-free Kolocep Island and wouldn%26#39;t like to pay too much on parking...

Thanks, Moti.

|||

Yes you have to pay to park there. I can%26#39;t remember how much it is though. It is difficult to find parking anywhere in that area. If you have a rental car it is probably easier to off hire the car and pick a new one up when you get back to Dubrovnik, especially if you pick one of the rental companies that have an office near to the ferry terminal.

|||

Thank you Balkan Addict.

Do you remember at least if parking in Gruz costs less or more than 5 euros a day?

Regarding the other option - using Atlas shuttle to the airport - how can I find out when there is a shuttle leaving from Graz to the airport? It can be quite risky to gamble on having one and then finding out I was wrong 2 hours before the flight back home...

Thomson holidays airport transfers

A word of warning for those people looking for transfers from Pula Airport. If you book airport transfers with Thomson dont expect to be dropped off anywhere near your hotel. We were dumped at 10.30 at night night at the mercy of the local taxi drivers and had to pay an additional 12 quid to get to our resort. Our flight had already been delayed two hours so we lost our on our evening meal. They do not make this clear when they sell the transfers and only told us when we got to Porec. They were not interested in how we got there because quote we had booked our accomodation seperately. However the rep managed to turn up early next morning at our hotel to try and sell us some trips. Named and shamed Thomson Holidays.

|||

Can you tell me if you booked your transfers with your flights. I failed to do this when I booked with thompsonfly and when I try to email them or go into their shops they tell me they dont do transfers from pula to porec. Regards

|||

Hi

Yes I booked transfers when I booked my flights on the Internet on Thomsonfly. The cost was twenty pounds per person each way, eighty pounds in total. They transfeed peopel to the Neptun and one other hotel from the airport, but we were left at the Porec bus station. On the way back they picked us up at the hotel with several other guests. They also sent us an email offerring extras such as Manchester Airport Parking, which we took them up on. Transfers were on this email as well. Not sure why you have been told this. Good luck.

|||

Thanks, Can%26#39;t understand why either and its really annoying knowing for a fact that these transfers exist. Thank you for your reply, I%26#39;ll now look for other alternatives. Regards Marie

|||

Hello Marie try www.medhotels.com they offer Transfers even if you%26#39;ve not booked a hotel with them. You can choose a Private Taxi or Bus. They only go to certain hotels but if yours is not on the list just find out which one is closest to yours and book that one then email the Transfer company and ask if they can take you to your hotel. I booked a transfer to the hotel next door to mine and after emailing them they have agreed to drop me off at my hotel they were really helpful. Cant guarentee they will do this every time but you might me lucky and your hotel may be on the list. Good Luck

|||

Were you staying at a Thomson hotel?

As far as I am aware, Thomson has for years had this policy: if you are a flight only customer and book a transfer, they will take you to a central point in the resort (usually a bus station), or they will take you to a hotel, if it is one of the hotels that Thomson feature.

Mark

|||

Hi Bananaboy.

Yes it was a Thomson Hotel and we were picked up from the hotel on the way back. I think the reasons we did not get transfered to the hotel was that every Thomson flight that day seemed to be running late. My gripe is that it was not made clear until the point we were dropped off at late at night. I am normally careful and reasearch through Tripadvisor what transfers are available and what the costs are. It was poor attitude and unhelpfulness of the rep and the fact they ignored my letter that annoyed me the most. Anyway leason learnt.

Appreciate your comments.

our trip is in 4 days and i am getting very excited....

i a few more days to go yet - how long does it take to fly from idaho

|||

Only two days to go - cannot wait!

|||

can%26#39;t figure it out, but we leave at 11:30 am on the 9th and arrive thru ohare, and munich, with great connections...arriving in zagreb at noon on the 10th...can someone tell me how long i will be traveling?? ha

|||

Hmm...If you are leaving from Idaho, Zagreb, I think is 8 hours ahead of you. So that would mean that you fly out at 1130 Mountain time, which would be 730pm Zagreb time. If I figure it out right, that means you will be traveling for 16 and a half hours!

|||

not too bad, to asia, it is longer. we keep one watch on local time and one on the time zone where we land...still, that tired, we never REALLY know the exact time in transit!!!

|||

wow long time travelling - I had to do that last year going to cuba - first fly to paris and then back over ireland again all the way to havana.

well worth it as havana is probably the most beautiful place I ever saw,felt, experienced but wow the waiting for 16 hours for a cigarette was a killer LOL

good luck charley

|||

I leave Sunday night out of New york. Going thru Paris. Arrive Monday. Anyone going to be in Zagreb? Staying at the Hotel Dubrovnik. Meet me at the cafe outside. Linda

Have a nice trip all of you, here is warm and sunny!

Hi just returned from Porec. Up until last sunday the weather was extremely hot and then they had a thunder storm. After that the weather was fresher and more bearable. Returned on 09.09.08 and spent that day on the beach where it was still very hot. However the temperature did drop noticeable after 7 -8pm so take something to cover shoulder etc. We tried the Dali restaurant and were so impressed by the excellent quality of the food, we only tried a couple of other but soon returned to the Dali, you will not be disappointed. Its situated at the far end of the harbour, up a small side street. watch out for the Istra restaurant and go up that street, its not posh looking so dont be put off. One tip, take flat shoes for walking around the town centre. Porec is absolutely beautiful and take a trip on the ferry to fortuna island if you get time. Have a great holiday, regards marie

|||

Vis restaurants

I have compiled the following list of potential resaurants to visit on Vis; can anyone comment and help me add or subtract?

Restaurant Val

Terrace overlooking the bay and outstanding cooking. It specialises in shellfish and crustacea, but also features vegetable dishes (a rarity), including a memorable caponata (capers are another of the island%26#39;s crops).

Villa Kaliopa

Situated in the garden of the 16th-century Garibaldi Palace and the smartest restaurant in town, Villa Kaliopa is frequented by those on the big yachts.

Konoba Vatrica

The place to go for a more modest meal. It has a peka, a traditional wood-fired oven used to cook fish or meat.

Hotel Tamaris has a good terrace for apéro or a meal.

Restaurant Dionis for pizza

Parallel 43 in Kut

AS Restaurant in Kut

Bako in Komiza

Waterside terrace and view.

|||

I had a bad experience at Restaurant Val--was overcharged by a waited who obviously pretended that there was a communication problem (have visited the country 3 times, so I know how to order). The manager took care of it, so take my one bad experience as you will. The food was so-so: not bad, but not memorable.

Ate the other two nights at Konoba Vatrica--it is fantastic and highly recommended! Don%26#39;t take from the description that it is inexpensive. It can be, depending on how you order (fish usually priced per kilo). I can%26#39;t rave enough about the seafood and its preparation here. A fun environment and great service.

I read about Villa Kalliopa and looked at it, but it seemed empty at the time of year I was there, so I gave it a pass.

I also had some decent pizza in both Vis and Komiza on the waterfront, but don%26#39;t recall the names of the places at the moment. There%26#39;s a good little bakery in Vis too for sweets and bread for snacks.

I have also heard of a place in neither Vis nor Komiza (in fact, you may need a boat to access it)--worth looking into.

Enjoy!

|||

Mala Trovna is the inlet where you can have memorable meal! Run by a poet/cook - Senko Karuza. But don%26#39;t expect anything fancy! You may end up preparing the meal yourself along with Senko if he is too busy :))

|||

Stayed in Komiza last week, and ate at Bako twice - the food and wine were excellent, and the setting wonderful (right by the sea). The first night the terrace was completely full, the second it was quieter. I%26#39;d recommend you reserve a table just to be on the safe side. They open at 4pm (although there is a mobile number posted outside if you want to make a reservation)

weather for next week!

We fly out to Cavtat on Sunday 9first trip) and have been soo excited, watching the weather for the past couple of months as it has been so dismal here in the UK this summer, really looking forward to a week for dry warm weather. The forcast for the next week is 60% chance of showers every day except Friday and temps down to 22 deg! should I expect the whole week to be a wash out?

|||

check weather underground website for cavtat

looks like the change is coming fri (tomorrow)/sat and it will be raining until the following wednesday. But Wednesday of next week looks like a lovely day again.

I find weather underground the most reliable of the weather websites - I always check it before I head off to various places.

there is another thread on this just below this one.

|||

Thanks Whales - will check out the weather - its our first time to Croatia and so looking forward to it, it will be a real shame if our week is marred by the rain!

Restaurants in Trogir

I have compiled the following list of restaurants in Trogir (it%26#39;s long, I know). Can anyone comment, help me narrow it down or add a good one?

Kamerlengo, quality fish and meat from an outdoor grill, just behind the Dominican church.

Restaurant Fontana - overlooks the front.

Restaurant Mirine for fish and scampi, in the center of town.

Restaurant ACY - cross the bridge - in ACY Marina Trogir

Restaurant Monika.

Corado restaurant

Retaurants and pizzeria Capo

Restaurant Alka

Restaurant Skrapa - good fish in a relaxed atmosphere.

Bistro Lucica

Top Balloon

Lucica: Dalmatian cuisine on Ciovo

For music try Caffe Bar Smokvica

|||

on my two visits to Trogir, I have enjoyed Kamerlengo.

|||

Thanks, DC, for this and the Vis response.

|||

you%26#39;re quite welcome--there%26#39;s a little square in Trogir with cafes and ice cream shops (%26quot;slasticarnica%26quot;)--lovely place for the latter or a wine or beer.

|||

Pizza Mrkec - follow the sign from the Riva. Always had great pasta and pizza and open in the winter (as in Fontana).

|||

I returned from Trogir this morning after staying there for one night. There are lots of tourist restaurants there which certainly didn%26#39;t appeal to me. However, I did eat at Restaurant Alka yesterday evening. There were tourists there, but the standard was good, and the waiters were very friendly (they also had a good line in banter with the customers without being overbearing). It%26#39;s been there for 40 years, and after having spoken to our waiter, we found out they do a lot of the catering for the Croatian embassy in Prague as well. Just out of interest, we walked past Monika, and thought their courtyard looked very nice, but the smell coming from their kitchen window was far too reminiscent of an English fish and chip shop for my liking (and I am English!).

|||

We visited Trogir last year for 3 nights and the best meal we had was at Fontana. Nice location on the front and we shared a delicious platter of seafood in sauce.

As a rule we found the fish and seafood (particularly the mussels) in Dalmatia to be excellent but the meat tended to be not so good (often over cooked for my taste).

"Dubrovnik View" apartment

Has anyone stayed at the %26quot;Dubrovnik View%26quot; apartments

dubrovnik-overlook.com/dubrovnik_apartment_s…

What did you think ? Was it nice ? Nice view ?

Cheers

|||

I have not stayed there, but I thought I would look at the website anyways. The view is a great view, but you are going to have to walk up a few stairs to get up to where this apartment is. The site says 300 meters from the Old Town, and that will be almost all up hill. If you aren%26#39;t against walking uphill, then I would say go for it. For me the view off the terrace would outweigh the steps taken to get there!

|||

We stayed at this place 2 years ago - find comments on TA under Dubrovnik Overlook Apartments as it was then called. Small, clean, very basic units with unbeatable views but the many steps were a challenge we could only face once a day! Come home with sense of achievement though!

truffle hunting

we will be in rovinj for one day on a cruise and are interested in going truffle hunting. is it worth the time and does anyone have a suggestion for a guide. thanks

|||

What date does the ship dock?

|||

Truffle hunting is fantastic but only if you are truffle lovers - others may find it tedious. We%26#39;ve only gone at night (with a guy who had never done it before). It was all kept hush-hush and secretive, of course. We loved it but then are really, really into truffles and food.

It really is an experience of a lifetime! When we went the dogs found 16 sellable truffles in 3 hours if I recall.

We found someone who knew someone who knew someone else who knew the guy who agreed to take us. We had to meet in a dark rural location where he took us away in his own vehicle. Sometimes you can even be blindfolded to protect the location%26#39;s identity.

any god hotel recommendations in dubrovnick

wanted to book 2 mights for dub, any good ones people may have stayed in ? many thanks

|||

Excelsior and Bellevue. Then Hilton and Argentina. You have the list of the hotels with reviews here on TA under hotels

|||

The DubrovnikBedandBreakfast - perfect location at old town gate, good value, clean and comfortable rooms, very friendly owner. Not a hotel, I know, but services similar - arranges transfers, excursions, always at hand for advice and assistance and overheard him happily agreeing to do laundry for other guests when they enquired about this.

Public loos in Porec? (Sorry to lower the tone!)

So can anyone help with the question about Loo availability for ladies? Can you just go into cafes/bars and use facilities or are there public loos? Otherwise will just have to dehydrate and not drink anything! Would really appreciate some info!

Been to loads of places but never to Croatia so don%26#39;t know the etiquette haha! Could possibly plot all public loos elewhere in Europe!

Thanks for any help.

|||

Was in Porec 2 years ago and returning this year, we found public loos, all spotless, just pay a few kunas to use

|||

Pick bigger restaurants/hotel terraces over the pubs because the size matters.Average pub thunderbox is more suitable for the tipsy hobbits)

|||

There is one at the bus station behind the Hotel Porec - drop 1 or 2 kunas in the saucer outside.

|||

There is one by the Rotunda Cafe just opposite the waterfront - think it was 2 Kunas but I used it when no-body was around so didnt pay!! Most you have to pay 2 Kunas to use.

Getting to Porec from Pula Airport

Hi Folks,

I%26#39;m going to porec with my girlfriend this september - its the first time either of us has been to Porec or Croatia! What is the best way to get from the airport (Pula) to Porec? We are arriving at 20:15 after we get bags etc it will probably be nearer 21:00. The hotel we are staying has offered transfers but it will cost 80Eur which seems a bit pricey, although it may make things easier! Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Dave

|||

last bus goes at 20:15 ( 53 kuna ),

http://www.autotrans.hr/index.php?c=timetable

so you have no other choice , either what you have been offered or try to negotiate a better price with a taxi .

|||

just called the taxi service ,

pula airport - porec is 400 kuna or 55 euro .

city auto taxi

500057

|||

verudella,

Thanks for your help - is there a taxi rank at the airport or would i need to book it in advance?

Dave

|||

i suggest you book in advance , the number is above - call them in the afternoon on the day of travel .

i would suggest a timing of 21.30 to cope with any delays . you will then arrive in porec at 22.00 - 22.30 .

|||

verudella,

Thank you again. I will phone them the before I leave Scotland :-) Is the full number

00 385 500057?

|||

Try medhotels.com transfers link,it seems from earlier posts that you don%26#39;t have to stay at their hotels to use their transfer.

|||

I booked with http://www.istriatour.com/ in the end. 300kuna and they will meet you at the airport. has anyone used this company before?

|||

DJ NICOL, the car hire you refer to is not regulated and will always be cheaper than local taxi%26#39;s because they don%26#39;t have most of the overheads. They have a reason for not putting an address or phone number on their site.

|||

Jackie, thanks for your message. You would suggest I book with the taxi company mentioned earlier then?

|||

day trip from porec

Hi my husband and I are off to Porec for a week on the 16th Sept staying at the fortuna island hotel. It is a treat for my 50th birthday and our 30th wedding anniversary. I was thinking of doing the Venice trip but it sounds a very long day and the whole idea is for a week away to chill out and relax can anyone advise is is worth a day out of our hol or would we be better perhaps trying one of the other trips (would quite like to see the scenery in Croatia and surrounds) any suggestions would be most welcome.

|||

The day trip we took out of Porec to Venice was a long day, but it was nice to see Venice for the first time. If that doesn%26#39;t sound like it would be well worth your time, then I would suggest taking a day trip somewhere along the coast where you are--- Rovinj, Pula or the Brijuni islands would be my suggestions.

|||

thanks for that was thinking rovinj sounds a nice trip out for a day and more relaxing not long until we go now am really looking forward to it

|||

we found the best excursion was by coach to the postjana caves and the Lipizana Horses stud farm across the border in Slovenia

Postjana caves are about 40 miles from Porec on a mixture of local roads and just off the Motorway to the east of Trieste. The Stud farm is on the way back near Trieste.

What you will see:

on leaving porec the road will eventually cross a Lagoon on a cause way with pleasant views an some small boats it then Gets sligtly attaractive and Hilly as you approach the Solvenian border where you eventually pick up the motorway whih heads you off to the green mountainous area through a series of tunnels youa arrive at the caves after about 1hr 20 mins there is a good sellection of souvineer shopping cafes and snack bars your guide may offer you an inclusive lunch package.

The caves: at the enterance of the caves you will board a small train without any roofs this will take you on a 10 minute 5 mile underground journey to the centre of the network of caves passing through an iteresting selection of chambers at speed you then disembark and your guide will ake you on a 1hour underground walking tour of the central section of the cave complex where you will see many stalagtite an stalagmite formations etc at the end of the tour you will see some salamandas that live in the cave and never see the light of day you then board the train again and return to the surface

you will need about 3+hours at the caves if it includes your lunch stop

Lipzana stud farm situated on the edge of a small town in pleasing countryside the farm has many horses in various stages of training you are able to visit the stables and some exhibitions/museums regarding the stud farm on some days there are demonstrations of the Horses performing their skills and tricks etc.

There are two restaurants and good tourist facilities here. two hours is probably adrequate but we visited on a day when they were have ing a Major celebration and display with chariot racing etc. so we did not have enough time (2.75 hrs)

a very good day out which i would repeat again.

Trevor

The Journey home takes just over the hour

|||

By the way My wife and I went to Venice this year from Lake Garda by coach instead of Porec

You will find Venice very busy and expensive and tiring

But the buildings are memorable just like the pictures If you like old buildings etc you will like venice

Watch the pickpockets they will snatch a camera as well as bags only take the minimum amount of money you need to spend in venice on lunch etc and lock the remainder in your hotel safe with your passport debit and credit cards the souvineirs are much cheaper else where. eat and drink near the rialto bridge area for more reasonable prices etc. even then expect to pay EUR5 for a .50 litre of beer 4Eur for a coffee 8 eur for a sandwich.

Porec is a much nicer and relaxed place in my opinion

Trev

|||

thanks so much for your detailed reply someone else not on the forum recommended the trip to the caves I am now wishing we were going for two weeks and not just one have definately decided to forget Venice on this trip (it means I can organise a holiday somewhere else) we were undecided between italian lakes and porec so may decide to do the lakes next year thanks again for the info

|||

As you mention wanting to see scenery in the area, how about looking for Flavours of Istria / Istra tour?

Usually the trip will take you to Pula to see the amphitheatre and spend some free time, then to Motovun (one of the charming hill towns) and usually includes an OK lunch. I think they also visit somewhere else, but it escapes me!

As commented above, the drive north towards Slovenia is quite nice.

Another one for scenery would be the Plitvice Lakes. Its a long day (14+ hrs) but the trip is worth it, and part of the experience. You%26#39;ll travel across Istria, toward Rijeka and around the Kvarner Bay. There will be great views on the right hand side over some of the islands. You%26#39;ll then head up into the hills and towards the National Park. The lakes are beautiful at any time of year - take some good walking shoes!

My advice is to explore Croatia as much as you can - seems a shame to go there and then travel out to Slovenia or Italy, without having had a look around first.

Have fun.

Mark

|||

Hi

I have just returned from Porec (2nd year running) and we went to Venice last year and booked it via our Thomson rep. It really was a long day and, despite Venice being beautiful, it was so long, tiring and expensive that we didn%26#39;t enoy it enough to do it again.

We looked around the Fortuna this year and the island that it is on and we really liked it.

You are just a skip and a jump from the bus station in Porec. It is behind the Hotel Porec on Obala Marsala Tita (Obala means Street or Road I think). If you go behind Hotel Porec you will find the bus station. The buses to Rovinj go at 9, 9.15 and 11.15. The tickets cost about 30 kuna per person and the lady behind the counter speaks enough English to sell you a ticket. Get the ticket before you get on the bus. Bascially always ask at the counter whether you buy on the bus or at the counter or the bus driver will kick you off!

From the bus station you can also get to Pula. Or you could catch the bus to Umag and then stay on it and pay again to go to Buje and you will have basically done the Flavours of Istria tour.

I did the tour to Lake Bled last year which was lovely and not too strenuous - about 3 hours on the coach looking at the countryside, a pleasant lunch in Bled and then back.

Jane

|||

If its just a Short Trip your after then i would choose Rovinj. Having already been to Venice I found Rovinj to be very similiar but much easier to get around and in my opinion much nicer, less touristy. We spent the whole day there and just got the local bus rather than an organised tour or boat Trip which gave us a bit more flexibility. Its a Stunning place.

We also went to Slovenia - ljubljana - We Hired a Car and the Journey was fantastic, beautiful scenery everywhere. I would have liked to visit Lake Bled too but the time just went too quickly.

oh no weather change for dubrovnik

just looked at weather underground for dubrovvers - looks like it is going to change on Thursday and become very dull and wet. Hopefully it will pick up again by the following week. .

|||

Whales,

I have been monitoring the weather for weeks, and alas, you%26#39;re right, it is going to rain from Sunday on!Too bad for us!

Hope it will improve for your stay!

|||

still raining on the Monday as well - just checked this morning.

|||

it will still be fab even if it is raining tho so I am not too bothered - I can only stand about 2 hours sunbathing before I get giddy and have to get up and explore anyway.

rieu - are you going to try lamb under the bell when you go.

|||

I know visitors don%26#39;t mind that much, but Dubrovnik and Dalmatia haven%26#39;t seen a single drop of rain since July - they really, really need some :)

|||

Yes, Zagreb, rain would be great, but the weather forecast does NOT help. In spite of weather forecast it will probably not rain in the south coasts(Hvar, Korčula, Dubrovnik)

|||

LOL

and here in Ireland the ONLY THING we have seen since the end of July is rain.

pity we couldnt%26#39; have a happy medium

|||

you are lucky in dubrovnik then , here in pula we haven%26#39;t seen rain since first week of june .

grapes have reached double price in istria compared to last year !

everyone is praying for some heavy rain :)

|||

still raining for the Tuesday of next week, Its great for dubrovnik as ye have not seen rain for ages, and I don%26#39;t really mind cause I will be excited to be there in hail, rain or snow, but I feel sorry for the sun worshippers heading off today for a week - they won%26#39;t get much sun.

|||

I%26#39;ve been caught in so much rain in Ireland this year that my skin in starting to shrivel. If it rains on my holidays I%26#39;ll cry!

Check out this 15 day forecast - thunder and lightening and everything!

http://www.accuweather.com/world-forecast-15day.asp?partner=accuweather%26amp;traveler=0%26amp;locCode=EUR|HR|HR003|DUBROVNIK%26amp;metric=1

Although every day I check it, the forecast is COMPLETELY different. Monday had rain and temperatures of 13 degrees for next week, yesterday it said sun and clouds, now its thunder storms.

Now, how do I fit wellies into that case :-)

|||

Ms Jelly , here is a link to webcam in Dubrovnik:

Can you see anybody with umbrella?

Ripped off from Pula to Opatija

What has happened to Croatia recently? Its been three years since we last went, and what a difference. From the time we stepped off the plane at Pula airport and the Taxi sharks asked us 150 kuna (£15 +) for a ten minute taxi ride to Pula bus station. We declined and held out for 120 kuna which was bad enough. They then tried to pressure us into taking their taxi direct to opatija for another 90 Euro (£71), when we knew we could catch the Autotrans bus for £15. Then several restaurants in opatija have introduced a %26quot;Cover charge%26quot;, whereby they bring you a fish on a saucer that you neither ordered or wanted and again try to charge extra. We were then overcharged for ice cream. Another taxi gave us a price from Rijeka to opatija and then tried to double it by later saying %26quot;each%26quot;. Add to that the nuisance of %26quot;disco seven%26quot; situated right in the middle of town, with young people mainly sitting outside shouting and laughing till 6 o%26#39;clock in the morning and what should have been a lovely experience is entirely ruined. It will be a long time till we return to a Country I have loved for over 35 years.

I%26#39;d be interested to know if other forum members have had more positive experiences in Croatia recently?

Hiking Boots in Rovinj?

Is there a place to buy hiking boots in or around Rovinj? If there is something like a Decathalon or GoSport on the outskirts - that would be fine as we will have a car to get there.

A day in split (on a med cruise)

hope this small comment helps somebody!

When you get a med cruise for a day in Split you get off the tender and just as you walk towards the town there is a desk with people selling a sightseeing

tour. Take this up it was well worth it. Much cheaper than anything on the ship. On the bus there is a sightseeing guide for 3/4 of an hour followed by a walking tour of the palace. Lots of local information and very interesting. Split was a lovely place to go would recommend it highly - even if it was just for a day.

|||

we are stopping there for our med cruise. is everything near the port and therefore walkable? i was thinking public transportation which seems cheap. at least be a local a bit. did you have to go get dollar exchanged in ship?

|||

The Palace is within (5 minutes) walking distance from the port and very compact for walking. Unless you are very interested in every historical and architectural detail (which you can read in any guide book), just do your own thing. The Palace is is easy to maneuver, and - in my opinion - more fun to experience on your own than in a tour group. Don%26#39;t miss sitting and having a cappucino in the Forum (outside of the Palace Walls, in the 9%26#39;oclock position) and watch the world go by. Geat fun.

|||

Sorry, don%26#39;t know if this is too late but you will need euros or kunas in split. In the centre they seem to accept both. We took £100 worth of kuna with us for too croatia stops - it was enough. I still stand by by take the tour option as it will take you further and higher than your own feet but yes you can see the palace by foot easily and some of the town.

Travel to Mostar / Sarajevo

I am visiting Dubrovnik at the end of October and would like to travel to Sarajevo via Mostar for a couple of nights in Sarajevo.

My plan was to travel to Mostar via bus from Dubrovnik and then get the train to Sarajevo from Mostar.

My question is do I need to book any of this travel in advance?

|||

Hi Goose,

Jim and I did the Dubrovnik - Mostar - Sarajevo journey in March of this year and (especially) because we were traveling during the shoulder-season (like yourself), we did not find a need to book anything in advance. What we DID do, however, was once we arrived in Dubrovnik our first stop was to go to the bus station to buy our tickets to travel to Mostar 3 days later. We did this just for our own peace of mind, and found we had our pick of any buses to take to Mostar.

Note that the bus station will only take the kuna as payment, so make sure to have some on-hand when you go.

As for the Mostar-Sarajevo leg, yes, there is a train but there are also several buses to choose from (again, no need to book in advance, but you may want to get your ticket once you arrive just to play it safe). I believe the train only runs twice a day to Sarajevo, while the buses run all day. We took the train to Sarajevo and the bus back and MUCH preferred the bus. While they both follow roughly the same (beautiful) route, the bus afforded much better views and passed through far less tunnels (there is also smoking allowed on the train and it got a bit stuffy in our tiny compartment whenever anyone lit up). Both the train and the bus take 2.5 hours, and the bus/train stations are right next to each other in Sarajevo.

Hope this info helps, have a great trip!

ferry from Italy to Croatia

What is ferry travel like in winter? Is it OK? There seem to be limited services.

I can find a daily ferry from Ancona to Split. Are there ferries from Pescara to Split?

how to get from porec to rovinj

We are traveling by car; is there a ferry or bridge that cross from Vrsar towards Rovinj

|||

If there is a minor road (my map said there is), we couldn%26#39;t find it last year! We used the A9, which was certainly quicker. I think that it%26#39;s at this point there%26#39;s a toll on the A9, and although I can%26#39;t remember how much it was, I can remember thinking it was not unreasonable.

Bus from airport to Podstrana

arriving early morning into Split airport and staying in Villa Stipe in Podstrana near Le Meridian hotel, is there a direct bus? if so what number or name is the bus? if not, do i change at Split bus station and change bus, what number? and how do i know what stop to get off by the hotel? and how long is the journey?

Your help is appreciated

|||

Hi,

there is no direct bus from AP to Podstrana; take the Croatia airlines bus (30 kuna, 30-40 minutes drive), get off on the last stop, then on the bus stop named Pazar (1 minute away from the last stop) wait for the bus N° 60 (Split-Omis); the price of the ticket is 10 Kunas on board and it takes around 15-20 minutes to Meridian Hotel; for the stop, just ask the bus driver

I hope this helps

Thanks for your reply most helpful

We will be travelling by bus from Mostar to Split, next week and will also be staying in Podstrana. Do you know if we can catch the #60 bus at the main bus terminal. Also, how often does it run during the day. Thanks

|||

No, you can%26#39;t, but the bus stop Pazar is 5 minutes walk from the main bus terminal or you could ask the bus diver to stop there; they usually do it; Bus N°60 runs every 20-30 minutes. There are also private mini buses on the stop Pazar which can take you to Podstrana; there is no time table for them; the departure time depends on passengers

banks and atm's

Can any one tell me if there are banks and/or ATM%26#39;s in Orebic. We are intending to go by bus to Dubrovnik and ferry to Korcula are there any other must not miss places?

with thanks in hope of replies.

Gill

|||

I would imagine that they are ATM%26#39;s in Orebic. I do know that there are many of them in Korcula though. Other than going to Dubrovnik and Korcula, the only other place that I would suggest is Mljet.

|||

Plitvice and Zadar!

Leave Zagreb early for Plitvice and then continue south to Zadar. Stay at hotel Bastion and enjoy this great city that is slowly emerging as one of the top travel destinations in Croatia

|||

I agree that Zadar would be a good choice.

accomodation nightmare!

Hi i have spent ages trawling the net for accomodation in either markaska or baska voda for two of us with a balcony !either hotels or apartments .Having problems with payment methods and for only 6 nights as we then want to move on to split

.Any ideas?

Have you tried with Adriatica? You can book directly through their site or contact their customer support with an email.

http://www.adriatica.net/home/home_en.htm

|||

Have a look at the Holiday Options brochure, you can either view on line or pick up a copy in a Thomas Cook travel agent. Even though you have no intention of booking with them (only fly from Bristol for 7 nights, not 6), the brochure will give you accommodation ideas in Makaska %26amp; Baska Voda. Good luck!

|||

I understand your frustration. I hate to say this, but I doubt it is possible to book for six nights in a decent hotel. They usually book for 7 or 14 nights ONLY. Might be easier to pay for an extra night that you don%26#39;t use and get a room that you like. The view from the balcony will be worth the extra bucks...it is absolutely breathtaking.

your favorite thing that you brought home from Croatia

I am wondering about the favorite things that anyone has brought home from Croatia. What was it that you %26quot;just had to have%26quot;, thanks

|||

Ask me in five weeks and I will let you know - counting down the days to my visit!

I understand popular handicrafts including embroidery, ceramics, woodwork and stonework.

Cravats and ties are popular, few people realise that the necktie, the uniform of business men, has its origins in Croatia.

Oh, and don%26#39;t forget the food, wine and spirits for research purposes of course!

|||

Try a jar of ajvar.....

|||

Although I am not a knick-knack person I had to bring home one of the little stone Istrian huts. They are not tacky, though - very unique and interesting. Also jars of truffles and truffle paste.

Wherever I go in Europe I bring back a cookbook - I like to try to replicate recipes to re-live trips at home. Same with books on that particular country - we bring back home 3-5 per trip.

|||

what is ajvar??

|||

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajvar

|||

i can%26#39;t believe that only a few posters wrote about their favorite things brought home from Croatia...Barry??

|||

We bought a wooden bowl that we%26#39;ve put on our coffee table. But I must say, the most precious are the memories and photographs!

We also bought pear liquer in Trogir for my stepdad, but I can%26#39;t remember what its%26#39; called.

Hand made table runners/cloth in Dubrovnik for our mothers which they love and regret not buying one for myself!

The cookbook idea is a good one. We also bought truffle paste, but have not used it yet!

What was your favourite charley48?

|||

i leave on sept 9th and want to know what i will be carrying home!!! from turkey it was 24 pasminas!!!

|||

If I lived far away from Croatia, I would ask somebody traveling there to bring me olive oil,red wine bought in the villages, lavendel oil,home made cheese..

Chefathome, do you buy Vegeta when you come to Croatia?

Everything else can be found on the internet(I mean, pictures, music, books etc).

Charlie get some Croat neck ties , the most known are the ones of the brand %26quot;Croata%26quot;

Island Day Trips from Dubrovnik

We have 5 days in Dubrovnik next year and I wanted to know if Hvar or Korcula was a better choice for a day trip? We have Mostar, Kotor and some other places booked to drive to but want to have a good island trip one day. Any suggestions?

Lesku

|||

Definitely Korcula just because it will be very hard to get to Hvar on a day trip. Korcula will be pretty easy to get to.

|||

Korcula will be easier to get to, as the previous poster has said. It is a beautiful town and island. So is Hvar, and it would be a shame for you not to see both of them. I would much rather go on two day trips to the islands and see either Mostar or Kotor. The islands offer a totally different atmosphere and vista. If you go to Hvar, try to find a way (rent a car, moped, etc.) to get to one of the highest points on the island. The 360 degree vista is an absolutely awesome experience--you won%26#39;t forget it!!

Kotor is nice, but isn%26#39;t that different from the other towns you will see in along the coast. However, Mostar is a must see-

Have a great time!

|||

Whilst not on your list another alternative island is Mjilet.

Korcula Town is beautiful and you will have a great day. It is though a bit similar to Dubvrovnik wheras Mjilet is a national park and offers something completely different.

The great thing with Dubrovnik it is almost impossible to pick a bad place to visit!

|||

for the major islands, as said above, you really can only look at Mljet, Korcula, and some of the others closer. Hvar is way too far to be a day trip. Also, a nice half-day trip, especially if you want to swim, would be to just go out to Lokrum. It is a 15 minute ride from the harbor and is a great, relaxing destination. Not much to do other than walk and swim, but there is a decent restaurant at the old monastery.

Croatia trip report - including Jelsa (Hvar)

Just returned from a fantastic weeks holiday in Croatia, 06/09/08 to 13/09/08 based in the resort of Makarska.

We booked a package holiday with UK tour operator holiday options which specialises in Croatia. Stayed in the hotel Park in Makarska on a half board basis.

Hope you will find the report useful when planning your trip.

Flights

Travelled from Bristol to Split with Brussels Airlines on a Avro 96 seater jet. Aircraft looked relatively new with leather seats and was relatively comfortable. Outward flight 2hrs 55min, return flight only 2hrs 30min. Both flights were on time, crew were friendly and efficient with a very smart appearance. Complementary food was served (ham salad sandwich and chocolate bar) along with tea, coffee and soft drinks which was more than adequate for a short flight. I was particularly impressed with the captains announcements which were always clear and passengers were always kept informed about the progress of the flight. It was the first time I have travelled with this airline and overall I was impressed, would definitely travel with Brussels airlines again.

Transfers

We arranged our transfers from Split airport to Makarska through the tour operator holiday options. After a little bit of waiting around for the outward transfer the return transfer back to the airport was smooth with no delays. Journey time from the airport to the resort approximately 1hr 30min. Please remember than when leaving Croatia you have to pack all batteries, e.g. cameras, shavers etc in your hand luggage. If you pack them in your hold luggage you will be asked to take them out in the airport. The airport authorities were very strict on this rule when we came home on Saturday, it does not apply for your outward journey, only coming home.

Accommodation - Hotel Park, Makarska.

The brochure describes this hotel as “an example of Croatia’s new breed of quality, 21st century hotels”. Brochure was not wrong, hotel was fantastic from start to finish. To be honest, I could not fault any aspect - we were extremely lucky as were upgraded to a suite on arrival. The suite had two floors with two bathrooms and two flat screen televisions and all of the rooms were very large. We had a sea view from all rooms with amazing sunsets which reflected in the bathroom mirrors! Hotel was extremely modern and immaculate, food was very good and staff were friendly and helpful. I have written a detailed review in the hotel section (definitely 5/5), should appear in the hotel section shortly. I have also included lots of photographs, there is not a great deal of information about this hotel or photos on the net. In the meantime, if you have any questions let me know.

Makarska

This was our base for the duration of the holiday. Thought Makarska was a very pretty resort, sitting in the middle of a horseshoe bay against a spectacular backdrop of the Biokovo mountains. I could admire the mountains all day, can understand why there are the tallest mountains in the Mediterranean. I recommend a visit to the towns museum which traces the towns history. Another point of interest is the Franciscan monastery which was built in 1400. This houses a wonderful sea shell collection which is open daily from 10am to 12pm. St Marks church is also worth a visit which features a baroque silver altar. After reading reports that Makarska was extremely busy in July and August I was glad to find that September was a lot quieter and in my opinion is an ideal time to visit. I would not want to visit in the height of the summer season. We had a good lunch time meal in the Adriatic restaurant on the harbour in Makarska, lovely fresh food with reasonable prices. During our stay in Makarska we visited the following places :-

Tucepi

We caught a small taxi minibus from Makarska harbour (close to hotel Porin) for 12kn, (under £1.50) very cheap and efficient, journey time 5 - 10 minutes. There is no set timetable, buses run every twenty minutes. The minibus does not take you into Tucepi itself, its drops you off on the main road and you will have to walk into Tucepi down a little hill (uphill coming back) but it is only a two minute walk. I thought Tucepi was a charming quiet resort with some lovely restaurants along the harbour and was extremely pretty, a lot smaller and quieter than Makarska. We originally booked in the hotel Laurentum in Tucepi two years ago but we had to change our travel plans because the airline cancelled the flights. We visited the hotel and it looked really nice in a very quiet position overlooking the harbour with a lovely waterfall and flowers outside.

Jelsa (Hvar) %26amp; Bol (Brac)

We went on a trip on the Pasat boat from Makarska to Jelsa %26amp; Bol. This was good value for money, 150kn (about £16) which included lunch on board the boat, either fresh fish or chicken. We left Makarska at 08:30am and arrived in Jelsa (Hvar) at 10:20am. The island of Hvar is the second largest in the Adriatic and in 1997 was voted as one of the ten most beautiful islands in the world by the traveller magazine and is known as the “Madeira of the Adriatic”. I have been to Madeira several times and am a big fan, it does remind me of the beautiful and lush vegetation. We only had an hour to explore the 16th century main square which is surrounded by baroque style building and take lots of photographs but it was really nice. Could have stayed there a lot longer. At 11:20am we left Jelsa bound for Bol and arrived at 12:30pm after a lovely fish dinner.

After arriving at Bol we turned right from the port to walk to the Church which took approximately 10 minutes. We walked over the beach and rocks but you if you have walking difficulties I would walk along the road as it is much easier. The church is definitely work a visit and combined with the clear waters and lots of greener the area is very pretty. After the church we walked back to the port (10 minutes) and towards the famous ’Zlatni Rat’ beach which took another 25 minutes. I have visited Bol previously, my last visit was over 20 years ago and is just as pretty. The only change I noticed was walking along the flat promenade under the trees towards the Zlatni Rat beach. There were quite a few stalls along the promenade, was not there 20 years ago. We spent approximately 3hrs 30min in Bol, caught the boat to Makarska at 4pm, arriving at 6pm. Excellent day trip and definitely recommended.

Mostar - Bosnia %26amp; Herzegovina

We visited Mostar in Bosnia %26amp; Herzegovina on a organised day trip with the UK tour operator holiday options. The actual tour was with Elite travel and I was very surprised that holiday options was charging the same price as Elite (380kn per person, approximately £43), usually booking through a tour operator costs more than booking with the provider direct. At 8.30am we left Makarska and travelled along the coast and mountains towards the Bosnia boarder. We had a coffee stop by some very pretty lakes close to the Bosnian boarder - sorry cannot remember the name of the lakes. I will write a separate review of Mostar in the Bosnian forum later in the week. In the meantime, if you have any questions let me know.

Weather (6/9/08 - 13/9/08).

We were extremely lucky with the weather, lots of sunshine and very warm with temperature around 32C. The only exception to this was on the day we returned home, we had a thunderstorm during the early hours of Saturday morning and there was a lot more cloud and cooler with temperature around 24C.

All good things come to an end and it is back to work tomorrow. Croatia is a beautiful country and all of the locals were always friendly and helpful. Hope to return next year, plan to stay in a resort close to Dubrovnik. If you have any questions, let me know.
