Hello!
I’ll be in Croatia on holiday September 1st-12th 2008. I’m renting a car, since it%26#39;s not high season, do I still need to be two hours before embarking on a ferry?
I’m going on a day-trip to Hvar from Split. However, instead of taking a ferry from Split to Stari Grad, I think that driving to Drvenik and then take the ferry there to Sucuraj may be more convenient to take the car into the island. Ferries are more frequent and it seems to take just a little longer than a direct ferry. Am I right or wrong? Do you know how frequent are ferries between Drvenik and Sucuraj?
As for the taxi boats to Pakleni islands from Hvar town, are they like cabs, or do they have any kind of schedules? Aslo, how about prices? Any suggestions about beaches on the island itself?
Thanks for your help!

Unless you are close to Drevnik, I%26#39;d do the Split to StariGrad route, though I%26#39;d question why, if you are only there for a day and want to visit the Pakleni islands, you need to take a car at all? For ferry timetables see jadrolinija website.

I would say the same, you don%26#39;t need a car if you will not be driving around on the island. You can come by ferry to Stari Grad, then bus to Hvar and then go to the Paklinski islands by boat. You will see there in the harbuor , they go many times a day.
If you will go to the Paklinski and be the same day back to Split, you will not have time for any other beaches, I suppose you want to see and Hvar town itself.
The alternative over Drvenik is to long for a one day visit to Hvar.

If you do not take the car, which obviously will only be a burden in Hvar, you could take the catamaran from Split. It is a shorter ride , only 45 minutes instead of 1h 45 for the ferry + 1 hrs. that you have to stand inline before, meaning you save 2 hrs. already ! In addition by catamaran you will get to Hvar Town directly, saving the 20 min. bus drive from Stari Grad to Hvar Town.

But Aeneas wants to make it in one day from Split, and the catamaran from Split is in the afternoon , and from Hvar in the morning-so, catamaran is ideal for one day trip from Hvar to Split and not in the opposite direction.

Aeneas, I anyway strongly recommand you to stay over night in Hvar Town. The atmosphere in the evening and night there is something not to be missed - and then the convenient catamaran option is a good solution.

In September there is a catamaran leaving from Split at 11.30 arriving in Hvar at 12.30.
For return on the same day one could take the late ferries from Stari Grad to Split, leaving at 8pm or 11 pm.

I must admit I don’t have a fixed plan for that day in Hvar yet. I was thinking about either going to Pakleni islands after visiting Hvar town, or else, go around the island, a little and visit, for example, Zavala. Either way, I’m determined to take the car, since I don’t want to rely on a small island local transport – I had some bad experiences in Gozo Island, Malta.
The catamaran option looks good in case I decided for only Pakleni islands – wouldn’t need extra transport at all. The schedules are so inconvenient, though. The point about Drvenik is that, instead of standing in line for 1-2hs in Split, I could see the coastline of Makarska Riviera on the way, and then see something more of the island. Apperently, you don’t have to be there in advance to take the ferry to Sucuraj, do you?
Staying overnoight at Hvar town sounds pretty good as well, but I’d have to change my hotel reservations. I’ll think it over.
Two more questions:
- Do you have to be 1-2hs in advance to take the ferry back so Split as well?
- As for the lavender fields, are they all over the island or just in specific areas?
Anyway, thanks for your help.

Before my trip to Crotia a few weeks ago I intensly explored the option going to Hvar with the ferry from Dvrenik, arriving at Sucuraj. I was warned by everybody here in the forum and then by tourists I met in Dubrovnik and even locals there, NOT to take that road which is very steepy , unprotected and seemingly dangerous. The car trip from Sucuraj would take a around 2 hrs. to Hvar Town%26gt; The way from Split to Drvenik takes 2,5 hrs. in a good car ( by my own experience).

About staying over in Hvar Town:
I also gad planned to be there only for the day. In the end we changed our travel plans there last minute, in order to be 1 night in Hvar and I can only recommend it. You would be missing the point of this island.

Is it really so dreaful a road that one between Sucuraj and Hvar? And to Zavala as well?
