Will stop in Dubrovnik in October for one day (cruising)and would love to walk the wall. What is the easiest way to do this as we are in our late 60%26#39;s, but fairly active? Understand there are many stairs to clim - where should we start ? Also, can we stop, or have a break or return somewhere if we find it too difficult? Appreciate any suggestions.

I would say start at the Pile Gate side of the wall. You will have to climb some stairs to start, but at least you will be fresh when you do that. We have always gone counter clockwise on the walls. There are places where you are able to sit down and rest and there are also places that will even sell you some refreshments along the way. There are also places that you will be able to leave the walls and be done with it if you are getting too tired. I think that you will be fine if you keep a good pace, plus the views you will get from up there will be well worth it!

I%26#39;m over 80.
Doing the whole wall involves about 720 steps,up and down.
I started at the steps closest to the Old Harbor, and did not do quite half the wall, going counterclockwise. I descended on the steps close to the Pila Gate.
It was a great and relatovely cool day in June, and the views were great. There might be some more worthwhile sights if you continue on the wall past where I got off, but I felt I had seen the best part, and also got some great video and stills. ctually, going down the steps was the hardest part, because there is no railing.
I did feel my knees that day and on the next, but nothing serious enough to make me regret the walk.
Enjoy your cruise.

I did similar to Treplow. When we got to the Pile Gate (on a Sat morning) the queue for the city walls was ENORMOUS so we went for a wander, we by chance found the entrance to the walls nearer the Ploce Gate by Gil%26#39;s.
You are forced round the walls in a one way system but this is good so that you are not constantly having to pass other people. The views from this side are spectacular, all across the old harbour %26amp; the roofs.
We did the whole thing (took about 2 hours with a short drink %26amp; toilet break) but definitely thought the first half, before the Pile Gate, was the most impressive. When you are on the sea side you have a great view out to sea but all the buildings are at wall height and residential so there is not a huge amount to look at.
There a couple of cafes round the sea side of the walls and a public toilet, on the other side (with the better views) there is only one small cafe so make the most of it!
It is quite hard work (I am in my late 30s and pretty fit) and very slippery in places. Wear sensible shoes with grips (I was wearing flip flops!), take your time and you will enjoy it.
