Istria in March and driving from Munich

We%26#39;re in the early stages of planning a trip to Croatia in mid-March 2009, with a focus on the Istria peninsula. A few questions:

1) I realize it%26#39;s not beach weather (I%26#39;m seeing about 10 degrees on various weather sites), but would it be mostly rainy or clear and sunny? Will a lot of attractions and restaurants be closed at this time?

2) Has anyone driven from Munich in March? It looks like its about 6.5 hours, but not sure if driving through Austria/Slovenia mountains will be snow covered and difficult to travel at this time of year. The reason I%26#39;d fly to Munich is because of amazingly cheap airfares we can get from Buffalo NY.

3) What%26#39;s the best place as a base for a week? We%26#39;re looking at a rental apartment in either Rovinj, Pula or Vodnjan

We%26#39;d be traveling with our 2 boys (11 and 9), and any suggestions on must see sights in the area would be appreciated.

Thanks

My daughter and I were in Croatia March last year. Apparently the week before we got there, the weather had been fine and quite warm. Obviously, it can vary from yera to year. We drove into Istria to explore a little, we visited Hum, which is reputed to be the smalled town in the world. i asked a local how many lived there and he told me 18. when we visited the cemetery, I remarked to my daughter that the number of dead far outnumbers the living there.

We went on to visit Buzet and Motovun small hilltop towns that are so picturesque. We then headed for Porec wher we had lunch.

We had intended to see more places but because we lingered, we had to head back to Crikvenica, south of Rijeka where my parents came from. I have visited Pula previously and that is also very interesting with a lot of history. You could stay in any of the larger towns, Pula is a good bet.
