I am going to Porec in a couple of weeks time.
I was going to change my money to Kunas before I go but some reviews I have seen suggest just taking money out from the cash machines there?
Also I am not sure whether it is a good idea to take a mixture of travellers cheques and Kunas. Are travellers cheques easily exchanged/accepted?

Reading the posts here , seems that nobody uses cheques anymore, nobody even mentions them as a possibility.

Forget travellors cheques nobody uses them anymore in my experience. Get some Kunas before you go to get you through the first day without having to find cash machines on arrival - say £50 which will get you a taxi, a meal or drinks on arrival. After that find yourself a cash machine, which are plentiful, and get Kuna. My experience is to get £100 the first time and see how far that gets you and then act accordingly rather than rushing to a cash machine every day.

Yes forget the travelers cheques... I used those on my first two trips to Croatia and will never use them again. Only ATM%26#39;s for me from now on.

Thanks guys!
Think I will forget the travellers cheques!
This site has been really useful and gives some great tips I will rememeber whilst on holiday.

I have asks this question before (and i repeated it from previous messages)
but, have you looked at the exchange rates in the uk? they average 8.4/£ but I have found a rate at 9.15/£. I have been told that it%26#39;s better then this in Porec.
I go to Croatia in September, so i%26#39;m looking at the rates every day.

Here is a link to a Croatian bank , where you can see the exchange rates:

Everyone who has posted on the site says %26#39;use the ATM%26#39;s whilst abroad%26#39;
Has anyone considered the bank charges whilst abroad?
two examples below:-
Halifax/RBS Accounts; = £1.50 per transaction
+ 2.75% conversion fee
+ charges from banks abroad
(if applicable)
Barcleys Accounts; inc - Deutsche Bank; Westpac; BNP Paribas; Scotiabank; Absa; Bank of America
= 2.75%
non Barcleys or above banks add an extra 2% (min £1.50 max £4.50)
(rates based on £100 transactions)
I personally think the best option is to take a minimum amount eg; £150 in Kuna and take the rest in Sterling pounds to change whilst there in a bank ect.
you should receive a better rate there.
Any views please let me know.

Use mix of travellers and cash.
No one took creditcards during our 2 week stay.
I changed travellers at the Zagreb bank in Porec - only downside is the wiat which can be 20 minutes. When you get in press 1 on the machine for a ticket - just like buying kids shoes at clarks.
Used a cash point on a trip to venice and a charge of a around 7% of the value of the transcation, around £50, was levied. Travellers cheques attract a charge of Kuna20 per cheque so take large cheques to cut down cost - overall this option averaged around 2-3% and thus cheaper!

The main thing to take into account is the actual exchange rate used. There is no point in getting cash commission free if there is a poor exchange rate. Check with your card issuer and the rates being offered at banks etc. what you win on one you tend to loose on another.
