We are going for 9 days holiday in Croatia and plan to move around a bit with Porec as our base. We are flying to Trieste this Saturday, where we take the car and drive to Porec. Could anyone advice an alternate and safe route as to avoid paying for vignette in Slovenia.
Any strong recommendation as what is a must to see in Istria?
Many thanks

Blue roads are vignette-free
Trst = Trieste

Thank you very much. That%26#39;s very helpful.

use google maps and look for the old road that goes parallel with the highway from trieste/skofije border to koper . you have to take off right at the border !
since you have a car , don%26#39;t miss out kamenjak while you are on a day trip to pula .

Thanks a lot Verudella! Where would be best to cross Slovenia/Croatia border while going to Porec?

skofije

skofije - italy/slovenia
dragonja - slovenia/croatia

There are so many must-sees in Istria! Rovinj is a lovely town on the water. The little hilltowns of Hum, Bale, Groznjan, etc. are atmospheric and packed with character. Great with a car as public transportation is limited (or nil) in those areas. Pula is interesting enough for the amphitheatre for half a day. Just driving around on the tiny Istrian unpaved roads is a pleasure - just drive until you lose yourself in the gorgeous scenery and ancient little towns.
A little further south is Plitvice Lakes - an absolute must see. You cannot go to Croatia without going there for a day.
Vrsar on the coast is pretty, too. Don%26#39;t forget the basilica of Euphrasius in Porec for excellent mosaics.

HI Chefathome, I thought about Rovinj and Plitvice, but those little towns you have mentioned sounds great.
Thanks for your advice.
