report on trip to Orebic

Trip to Orebic

The flights we booked through Thomson online, no trouble with boarding and all seated together which was nice. Take food and drink with you if you do not want to pay onboard, both flights were on time and comfortable for short hops.

We also booked the villa online through Owners Direct who we have found to be good on previous occasions.

Our villa was up the hillside with wonderful views of the mountain, and glimpses of the sea and Korula. We found this villa at the last minute as our first choice fell through, (we found out the owner had not registered the villa with the authorities who had made them close it for a month) we had a pool which unfortunately was cold this late in the season. Also there was no oven in this villa, so meals in had to be BBQ or rings only, but it was comfortable and had lots of outside space with plenty of loungers. Please find out how high on the hill your villa is if you book here. 10 minutes from the sea sounds good but when going back is a climb of 1 in 4 it could be disastrous to your holiday.

We booked our taxi through Korkyra agency. Email info@korkyra.info and I would recommend them.

They were waiting in the airport holding a paper with our name on. Also they were well in time for the return to Dubrovnik airport, although the driver talking on the phone while going round hairpin bends was a bit disconcerting. The drive is almost 2hours, in daylight spectacular, but nerve racking if you are worried about driving along cliff sides.

The coast has wonderful bays and there are lots of islands covered in trees.

Orebic (pronounced Orebich) is a nice little town, quiet when we were there late Sept but with small supermarkets, butchers, bakers and wonderful fruit stalls where you taste before you buy, even the local brewed spirits. These all line the road through Orebic.

There is a good shingle beach at one end of the town and little inlets big enough for two at the other end of town beyond the ferry terminal. The foot passenger ferries to Korcula were every hour and very reasonable, under £1 one way, pay as you board. The car ferry is a different dock to passenger ferry. There is a bank next to the ferry with an ATM.

We ate at the Amfora a couple of times and were very pleased with the food, the sirloin steak was good (120 kuna, mine) but all the group were happy with their meal, the mixed grill 125 kuna would have kept me going for two days, so much on the plates, and the service was excellent, the restaurant faces the sea on the pedestrian road and has a first floor balcony to eat on. We also went to a place for pizza which were also good, cannot remember the name began with Ja, this is the last building the sea side of the pedestrian road going towards Dubrovnik.

At the other end of town near the passenger ferry there is a small café set in the cliff only big enough for two tables next to a small jewelers they do a marvelous burger, amongst other things, then sit on a bench at the edge of the sea and enjoy.

There are some lovely walks out of town, the monastery is easy to get to and there are wonderful views across to Korcula and the other islands, it is shut 12-3, and beware the bell, very loud.

Every one raves about Korcula and rightly - a must see, will probably be back to stop there another time. Give enough time to wander the side streets and sit in one of the cafes that line the sea walk.

There are exchanges, banks and ATM’s, also lots of tour companies so compare before you buy, again the Korkyra agency are on the island and do good deals on boats and cars, but if you are a group try haggling or arranging your own tours to suit yourselves.

The weather this late in the season was good for walking about 68 – 70 degrees

Our group of 8 had a wonderful time and will definitely be back to Croatia.
