Trebinje beware!

Whilst staying in Cavtat last week,we decided to take a trip to Trebinje,just over the border in Bosnia.According to a guide book,it was a pleasent place to spend a few hours looking around.What a threatening dump in a time warp it is.Communist type,graffiti strewn tenements greet you as you enter the town.Having found a car park with dodgy looking men offering to %26quot;keep an eye on your car%26quot;,we turned straight round to get back to civilisation.On the outskirts of town we were stopped by the local police demanding a fine for not having the headlights on.He said he had us on camera but it seemed he was just on the %26quot;make%26quot;.After a long dispute,and asking us to not spread bad words about Bosnia,he offered to pay the fine (about 15 euros).Would an English policeman do this?I don%26#39;t think so.

There was a post on Trebinje few months back and I warned people that most of the taxi drivers will not drive there and there was nothing to see. Then some people said that it is worth driving there and then you almost got in trouble. Trebinje in Bosnia or Nikšić in Montenegro are not nice places and do not go there with Croatian plates...

I think thee is a major court case on at the moment over that english policemen do!! and its a lot worse than asking for a 15 Euro fine. off the high horse please.

|||

%26quot;Communist type, graffiti strewn tenements%26quot; !! Sounds like a lot of towns that we all know !!!

|||

this is %26quot;Croatia forum%26quot; and as I see you all know that Trebinje is in Bosnia.

|||

Yes, but lots of tourists visit Trebinje on a day trip from Croatia.

|||

Yes, we know that Trebinje is in Bosnia, but as Welsh Traveller has pointed out people are interested in taking trips to surrounding areas.

Even though I have driven to Trebinje on several occasions and have never had a problem there I am not familiar enough with local politics etc. to advise whether a person should visit or not. For the record I like Trebinje. Yes, it is obvious that it is not a prosperous place but the central area is quite interesting and some of the restaurants are excellent in quality and value.

I am always doubtful about the objectivity of reports when words like dump, in a time warp, communist type tenements, dodgy looking men,etc. are used.

Thanks to all who replyed to my post.It was my account of a bad outing.In answer to the replies,WHALES-how many policemen do you know who pay your fine?MORLAGUE-if only I had your knowledge beforehand!DONALOG-yes,there are poorer areas in the UK and i%26#39;m sure you felt ok in Trebinje.As someone who had my missus with me,I wasn%26#39;t prepared to spend another 5 minutes in the place!After all,I thought Tripadvisor was a site to share experiences,good or bad.

|||

ya, no problem with sharing your experiences. What I didn%26#39;t like is your comment at the end - %26quot;would an english policeman do this%26quot; - what kind of comment is that.

I say have a look at what english policemen do - and then you may not be so fast to get up on some kind of high horse about your english policemen. Obviously you don%26#39;t take much notice about your english policemen and the antics they get up to.

My final contribution to this subject. Beautifulswan,

I accept that you had a bad experience with a policeman

on yor exit from Trebinje and that the initial look of

the town did not impress you. I would agree that the

entrance looks run down but where I disagree with you

is your terminology which must be hurtful to the

ordinary decent, mostly poor,people who live there.

Again sorry that you had such a bad experience.
