at the end of May this year I will be taking a sailing holiday, starting in Dubrovnik and finishing 2 weeks later in Split. We plan to sail around the islands. I would love some advice as what areas should not be missed, and which def should be avoided. Also any rec regarding good local restaurants etc would be very much appreciated.
We did sail in Croatia on a previous hol but started and finished in Trogir so our approach was from a diff area.
Thank you.

We plan to do this same cruise in a bareboat charter next June 2009. Any advice on
a) weather that time of year? Is it v windy? And is the sea v cold to swim in?
b) prevailing winds. Is it better to go Dubrovnik to Spilt ot otherway round (one of our team is a novice sailor so wd rather sail downwind!)?
c) any advice on %26#39;must see%26#39; islands and places to avoid?
Still in planning phase and can do it anytime from last week of May thru to end June so advice on whether to go earlier or later would be v useful. Thanks

prevailing wind easterly mostly. Weather should be lovely with a very slight potential to have a few thunder storms. We sailed there first fortnight of June 08 from Dubrovnik to Split. Lovely sailing. All the islands are worth a visit but as you will not have time to see all the ones we loved were the obviously well documented ones of Hvar and Korcula which have a great buzz, lovely restaurants but can be a bit twee unless you get in behind the main drag.
We especially loved Vis especially the less developed harbour of Komiza. Vis town is well worth a taxi or bus ride to . It is more gentrified than Komiza.
Another harbour which we visited which is not too cleaned up was vela luka on the island of Korcula. We felt there was a nice local atmosphere there.
We visited the island of Mljet and stayed in Polace. It is a nice safe little harbour. However it is not a place I would be rushing back to ! Too touristy for my liking. However others may feel otherwise about it.
The walk around the walls of Dubrovnik is well worth doing. Also, the older central part of the city of Split is lovely.
I envy you.

Just realised i got carried away and did not answer some of your queries. I would choose the latter part of June for warmer weather. Sea fine for swimming in from my perspective. However we are used to cold water all year round in Ireland ! We found the water to be warm even in v early june.
Sailing from Dubrov to Split is fine wind wise

Easterly winds are rare in Croatia - wind from the east is called Levanat. There are two major directions - south with Jugo wind: warm and moist with often big waves and then there is Bura or northern (northeastern) wind which sometimes has very fierce gusts and definitely something to be aware of and to follow weather forecast on the daily basis. In the summer, the most common wind is the Maestral or western wind - perfect for sailing down the Croatian coast. Maestral is usually an afternoon wind and it is the result of sun warming the sea and causing the difference between the temperature of land/air and the sea. The best way is to zig-zag between the islands.
The islands not to miss: Brac, Hvra, Vis, Korcula, Mljet. Lastovo is also FANTASTIC! If cruising from the north - Cres is magical and once you reach Kornati National Park you will know why it is a National Park area.

Any advice on which charter company to go with? I know both Sail Croatia and Sunsail are big there, but big is not always better.
