I went to Croatia with the highest expections.I am of Croatian decent. I came home yesterday shaking my head saying, my GOD. I have circled the globe twice so I know countries and experienced many people. Croatia needs a blanket across the board lesson on kindness dealing with tourists. From a general concenses in meeting people in my 3 weeks was, surley, brisk and complicated. What%26#39;s so complicated about being nice? Tourist info for the most part were just.........throwing you a pamplet. Ferry ticket people sour looking, twice short changed me, then shooed me away with their hand, and took care of the next in line. Shopkeepers with crossed arms. I was laughed at by 2 teenage girls when I asked about the 1 B bus in Dubrovnik to the main bus station. When I realized I missed my stop, I went to the driver and he let me off, told me to cross the street and catch the bus back 1 stop. When I went back to my seat and get my suitcase, they looked at me and started laughing again. When I got off the bus they stuck their tongues out at me. Is this a way to treat the people who feeds you? I showed Croatian people nothing but smiles and kindness, only to be stared at, How does a country expect to survive on tourism with this attutide? On a positive note, the restaurant staffs were great. Most hotel receptions were wonderful also. I rented 2 apartments, both owners were delightful. It%26#39;s just the others that need an attitude adjustments. I traveled independently, so I dealt with secondary people. I%26#39;m sure people traveling on an organized tour would not experience all the above. I would now hesitate to recommend Croatia, which is sad, because it is a beatiful country. From the US it%26#39;s a long journey for a 8 day tour though. Did I just pick a bad 3 weeks or have others experienced this also? Linda

Sorry to hear about your bad experiences. I have honestly not seen that kind of Croatia. Every time I have gone I been treated kindly and with respect. The only people that I have ever thought were a bit crabby were the guys in the ferries trying to tell you where to park the car and they had very little patience. I don%26#39;t think you saw the true Croatian people!

I couln%26#39;t believe my eyes reading your post. YOu seem to have had a bad experience. I have to honestly say that after just coming back from Croatia for the fifth time, I have never met nicer people and thats what keeps me going back. I have never experienced anything like that in all the time I have been there - in fact, quite the opposite - I feel like they are uncommonly friendly and will go out of their way to help you. This time we stayed just over two weeks, and by the end of that two weeks the local people knew who we were, acknowledged us on the streets, waved and spoke to us. The people could not have been nicer.
In regards to the two teenage girls - I wouldn%26#39;t take that personally - I don%26#39;t know if you ever have been a teenage girl but giggling and laughing are one of the most common things teenage girls do - its all part of growing up. I%26#39;m sure you have done it yourself when you were a girl (if you are not male). I don%26#39;t understand your comment %26quot;is this the way to treat people that feeds you?%26quot; what were you feeding them??
I travel independently also and I have had always the best experiences there - in fact people who I haven%26#39;t seen for a couple of years remembered me this time round.
I think maybe (and I could be wrong) re. your comment about %26quot;treating people that feeds you%26quot; that you might have thought that you were doing them a favour by being in their country - maybe subconsiously you were acting like you were better than them or something? I could be wrong and that comment might mean something entirely different than what I think it means, but If you have that attitude when you were there then I can understand why you were shooed away.

Great post Whales!
Did you skip rain this time?
|||
have to agree with whales, as a Croat I find your comment about %26quot;feeding%26quot; quite offensive and arrogant. IF you`re acting like you`re better man just because you might have more money, don`t expect them to treat you like a God.

Jelsa
The first thing I had to buy when I arrived was an umbrella - that first day the wind blew our hats off, it blew the umbrellas inside out, and I walked into a puddle up to my ankle - it was thunder and lightning, strong winds and very bad rain.
That lasted the first couple of days - then it got much better - lovely sunny days but cold at night - some rain - and we only got to sit by the pool about 4 days, but I loved every minute of it regardless of the rain.

Agree with all the positive comments, returned from Croatia last month. The local people were always friendly and helpful, subsequently planning a return trip next year.

we just got back from croatia, and i must say, this is the nicest country . we drove, rode the bus and i can%26#39;t say enough about the country. besides the wonderful people, and we have met some that are coming to visit!!!, the food, the countryside, the hospitality...wow, and we were really tourists, meaning, we had no idea about riding the busses, driving (love the bars in the gas stations) and the safety. we travel to other countries, and always take a safe route. it was so safe in croatia, that i let my guard down so much, i worried about myself!!!
I love CROATIA, not sure what happened with offpitney, maybe i should have met her at the hotel dubrovnik!!ha
i will write a more detailed account of our trip and the fabulous places that we stayed in...some were just unbelievable, well , they all were. hats off to the nicest country and oh, so clean...enjoy

I have been wondering how your trip went Charley48.. Glad to hear it went well and that you have nothing but good things to say. I am also not sure what happened with offpitney. I will look forward to your report Charley48!

I am currently on holiday in Croatia, in Isteria, and have been here a week. We have driven down here, and have explored a lot of Istria. I have found the country, the people, and the service in restarants etc very good.
I can not understand how the original poster did not find the same experience.

the strange thing is that the person claims he/she is of croatian decent , i have heard something similar just once - from another person , he also had croatian roots , in the end we concluded there was something wrong with his behaviour and not the world around him :)
