Rip off Accommodations in Dubrovnik

My husband and I just spent a month (July 2008) driving around the Mediterranean, Adratic, fron Geneve south through Italy to Greece/Crete and up through Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia and Switzerland. The only place we got completely ripped off was in Dubrovnik and I want to warn everyone about it.

We paid 150 euro a night for a truly awful, grubby little room. We were referred to a woman called Nikolina Deranja by one of the hotels because they were fully booked. We assumed her private accommodations would be up to the hotel standards ... what a mistake. What we got was a tiny room about 12%26#39; x 13%26#39; not an %26quot;apartment%26quot;. It was furnished with things that looked like they%26#39;d been found on the street, 3 dirty mis-matched plastic chairs and a rickety card table for the %26quot;dining area, sheets of sawn-off formica for the beside tables. Everything was grimey and worn, cats pissed on the front door. The shower stall pan was rusted through in 2 places and the shower curtain was too short so every time you took a shower the bathroom and hall flooded and the drain in the middle of floor was blocked. What a mess. It was located in the old city but 30 feet from the noisiest square in town were a jazz band competed with a live Dj until the wee hours. And finally it was not, as we were told %26quot;5 minutes%26quot; walk to parking. It was more like 25 - 30 minutes to parking through streets packed with tourists and up a steep hill. As I say this was a complete rip off. I understand Nikolina Deranja also runs a website called Welcome to Dubrovnik so I would avoid that too. I also noticed the name Deranja on a sign for an %26quot;apartment%26quot; for rent right outside the old city on the heaviest truck route into town so be warned.

i am always astonished at the inability to check the surrounds and never pay until satisfied.... caveat emptor.

I must be street wise beyond walletdom as i find the dubrotherhood (street touts) are even fair in the sobe stakes and even 50 meters from the Pile Gate a room was E22 pp and that included breakfast......all aquired off the street and doing due diligence.

private accommodations are below or top 60 euro for a 2+2 A class apartment on croatia%26#39;s coastline - that includes standard service such as taxes , sea view , aircondition , satellite tv , wifi , parking and fully equiped kitchen .

if you agreed to the price you mentioned and the poor

conditions you must have noticed before checking in you have yourself to blame .

deranja is a very common surname in dubrovnik area btw .

|||

just googled her full name and dubrovnik , the price for what you claimed you rented is 50 euro/night throught the season .

|||

I also just googled it and see that it is listed at 160 Euros a night on the site I found.

I do agree that a person should check these things out before agreeing to pay that much though. These problems should have been there when you checked it out on arrival.

thats a 6 person 80m2 apartment , click the bottom link - NIKOLINA (ND-K-0066) .

Sorry about your bad experience. I, too, always book a place in Dubrovnik in advance and do lots of research. So far we have found charming places for 60 euros or less (about a block from the old town centre). And our favourite place has no steps!

Hopefully you can go again, find a lovely spot, and have a more positive experience in a great town!

if you have a look at the last link i found/posted , nikolina%26#39;s 2+1 sobe/apartment in old town are just 50 euro , no 150 !!
