I am thinking of travelling to Croatia next year with my husband and our 2 sons. Where in Croatia would people suggest we stay? We are in our late twenties and enjoy good food and quite lively nightlife. Beaches are a must too.

Depending on your budget, i would go with either Hvar or Vis and then south to Dubrovnik area. There are few options like private villas, self catering apartments, hotels but the best time you will have if you rent a car and go exploring the area!

I agree with the above suggestions. Just to note though, that while it is amazing in terms of beauty and beaches, Vis does not have a tremendous amount of night life; at least not in comparison to Hvar Town, or even Bol. But you really cant go wrong anywhere, just research each island and see what hits you. Dubrovnik is also a must in my opinion for a night or two.

I would suggest you to choose one of the cities on the coast for your arrival and then to rent a car and visit all the cities on your way.... going along the coast from Rijeka to Dubrovnik, you can visit them all (Zadar, Biograd, Sibenik, Primosten, Trogir, Split, Dubrovnik, and manage to stay a few days on Hvar. It depends on how many days you have....
