Has anyone been to Brela?

I was thinking of visiting a small town called Brela. Its on the coast, about two thirds of the way between Dubrovnik and Split.

It supposed to be a very small %26quot;out of the way%26quot; type of place, and I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations about local attractions, restaurants etc. Apparently, the coast line there is beautiful.

Hi,

we were in Baska Voda Autumn-04. That is very close to Brela and we often walked from BV to Brela. Both are very nice small places and there are many nice restaurants by the sea. I don´t think they really have so many attractions, but the views are stunning and the %26quot;Makarska riviera%26quot; absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend!

Thanks for the reply. Just got back from Croatia on Sunday. Brela was delightful. We stayed in a private apartment in one of Brela%26#39;s coves called Stomarica, about 1.5 km from town. It was great walking along the beach esplanande to the town.

The people are so friendly and laid-back. Very different from the pace and crowds in Dubrovnik!

I am really glad oyu enjoyed your trip. Did you eat out umuch? How did you find the prices? I am staying at the Soline hotel in October and cannot wait to go.

We are thinking of spending some time in Brela next summer. Is there any night life there or is it pretty laid back? how is the swimming? are the beaches crowded? How is the water quality here? thanks for any other information you can give on Brela.

Traveller113 and barrymanilow,

We had a wonderful stay in Baska Voda - the next little town to Brela - for the last week in August. We walked round to Brela which looked beautiful - possibly a bit quieter than Baska Voda which is a very busy holiday town.

To answer the specific questions: the sea is beautiful, clean and calm. Pedalos, Jet Skis, and motor boats are for hire but clear areas are marked out for swimmers. The beaches are shingle, narrow and crowded in the middle of the day but quiet in the morning and evenings. There are lots of restaurants along the sea front - generally doing grills and pizzas - and the prices were very reasonable, about GBP30-40 for a simple meal for four. As for night life I don%26#39;t think there was much in Brela - there was a disco in Baska Voda - apart from the many bars and restaurants.

Hope this helps, I definitely recommend this area of Croatia, the scenary is stunning with mountains rising directly out of the clear blue sea.

Not many Brits or Americans in the area, mostly Czechs, Hungarians, Germans and Italians but everyone we met was friendly and most spoke enough English for us to get by.

We went to Brela a couple of years ago and thought it was beautiful, quiet and unspoiled. We enjoyed a day trip to the islands with lunch onboard.

The only thing I would add to other posts is about public transport if you don%26#39;t hire a car. We travelled by bus from Split, but it drops you on the main highway quite a distance above Brela and there is no local bus from the highway down the mountain into Brela, although when going back you can book a taxi to take you up the mountain. To walk down would maybe take half an hour and would take longer and be pretty strenous going up, particularly with luggage. Luckily our kind landlady arranged to pick us up.
