We are a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 girls, 18 and 22). We are planning a trip to Croatia in mid July 2009. After spending 2 nights in Dubrovnik, I would like to find a nice town on the coast, not too wild, but not too quiet either, that is beautiful and has lots of charm, and which we can use as a base for these activities:
- rafting on the Cetina
- vistit to the National Park with the waterfalls
- day trip to an island
- visit a town or two of cultural significance.
Anything come to mind as a beautiful town on the coast to use as a base? Afterwards, we are heading towards Italy and/or Slovenia. We will have a car.
Thanks so much.

In mid July there are no quiet places in Croatia! My recommendation would be Sibenik or maybe even Trogir. Both are good for what you are looking for and there is also rafting or kayak on Zrmanja river. Another GREAT activity for entire family is caving at Modric cave. Since your girls are pretty big, they would enjoy Hacienda club near Sibenik or the cafes in Vodice. I would recommend Sibenik B%26amp;B or something like that for your stay.

My first thought was Trogir, but Sibenik would also be a good choice!

Trogir is my suggestion. Has everything you are looking for...

Trogir would be my choice if it was less crowded in mid July! Sometimes it is impossible to even exit the hotel/house!

Morlaque,
Does it really get that bad? I was there in June and it could not have been more tranquil. I am glad to hear for Trogir%26#39;s sake (business, etc) that it gets crowded in July. But I can see where the streets could be tough to traverse with huge crowds. A great little town though.

Hi all, thanks so much for the suggestions. I will definitely check them out. One more question... I read about Mostar and would really like to add that to our agenda. What do you think of Masurska as a base? How does it compare to the other towns you suggested? Thanks again, this is so helpful! Felice

If you mean Makarska, then that would be an ok choice. It will keep you close to the Cetina, but farther away from the waterfalls of Plitvice or Krka. It would make it easier to get to Mostar though too, which I would definitely suggest that you do!
